Marvel’s Long-Delayed ‘Nova’ Series Finally Takes Major Step Forward
Dec 23, 2024
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has launched countless successful TV shows like WandaVision, Agatha All Along, and Hawkeye (alongside one or two duds, namely Echo and Ms. Marvel), one project has always failed to get off the ground — which is ironic considering its set in outer space. Marvel’s Nova series has been in fans’ minds since the Nova Force debuted in Guardians of the Galaxy. The project was announced in 2019, but fans have heard little about Nova since. Thankfully, Marvel fans finally have some good news.
Nova has bounced in and out of development hell for years, but a new face could be sailing the (space) ship out of the storm. Ed Bernero has officially joined Nova as a writer and showrunner. Bernero has been writing and producing hit shows since the ’90s, often within the police drama/crime genre. His most popular show to date is by far Criminal Minds, which debuted in 2005, and is currently in its 18th season.
Bernaro has stepped in to replace Sabir Pirzada, who was originally tapped as Nova’s writer. Pirzada was the writer on Marvel’s divisive series Moon Knight. It has not been revealed why Pirzada left the project. Nova has been a long time coming for the MCU. No official release date or window has been announced for the show, as it is still in early development with Bernero on board. In July of this year, MCU boss, Kevin Feige, teased when we can expect to see Nova on the big screen. he said:
“It’s three or four years out.”
Who is Nova in the MCU?
If you’ve watched the MCU from its Iron Man days, you might have heard the word “Nova” tossed around a bit. The Nova Force were the protectors of Xandar in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, with Glenn Close starring as their leader. But the Nova Force was wiped out by Thanos before Infinity War and they haven’t been seen in the MCU since.
Nova the hero is the code name for Richard Rider. Rider was born in New York, and was chosen by the last Centurion of the Nova Force to inherit their powers and become the next Nova Prime, the protector of the now destroyed planet. Nova uses many of the go-to superpowers, including flight, super-strength (at this point, is there a hero without super-strength?), invulnerability, and eye-blast beams. Nova has been a hero, anti-hero, and villain in Marvel Comics across the years, first debuting way back in 1976.

Very little is known about the MCU’s Nova series. With Xandar decimated, it perfectly sets up Nova’s introduction to the franchise. Although some fans are hoping it might have already happened. The last update the project received was in November of this year. Marvel’s head of TV and streaming, Brad Winderbaum, said that the first results from Nova’s early development give him a lot of hope for the show’s future, saying:
“What I’ve seen so far is extremely promising. I will say that.”
