Marvel’s Wonder Man Series Might Have Found One of its Directors

Apr 25, 2023

The release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is still far away, but Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is ready to leave Black Manta behind and cross to the other side of the road, becoming a Marvel hero in Wonder Man, one of the upcoming MCU series, which keeps advancing at a safe pace.

After confirming its main star and the return of Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery, little has been known about the expected project. However, there is finally news about it. As reported by Discussing Film, the director of The Spectacular Now and Shrinking, James Ponsoldt, will be one of those in charge of getting behind the cameras for the original Disney+ series.

At the moment, it is unknown how many episodes Ponsoldt will be directing for the show since he will be sharing the task with the director of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, Destin Daniel Cretton, who recently closed a major deal with the company to produce content, after the excellent reception of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Who is Wonder Man?

Marvel Comics

Wonder Man, or Simon Williams, is a superhero created by Stan Lee along with artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby. He made his first appearance in 1964 in Avengers #9; however, he did not make it out of the story alive. Four years later, in Avengers #58, it was revealed that the character was brought back to life but was never heard from again. It wasn’t until 1972 in The Avengers #102 that he reappeared in a coma. It was in 1977 that, after several attempts to revive it by different characters, he was restored in Avengers #160.

Simon Williams is the son of wealthy industrialist Sanford Williams, owner of Williams Innovations. He inherits the factory after his father’s death, but the company’s profits decline due to his biggest competitor, Stark Industries. On the advice of his brother Eric, Simon tries to embezzle funds from his company but is caught and jailed. Blaming Tony Stark for this, Simon agrees to the proposal of the villainous Baron Heinrich Zemo, who requires a pawn to infiltrate the Avengers. The desperate Simon Williams agrees and transforms into a power ion with superhuman abilities.

Eventually, Wonder Man becomes a hero, although it is still unclear what arc the character will follow in the series, which is announced to hit Disney+ in 2024.
