Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning IMAX Review
Jul 12, 2023
Part 1 of this double-header sees Ethan Hunt (Tom Cuirse) in a battle vs The Entity, an artificial intelligence that has gone sentient that can guess his every move as Hunt travels the world to locate this supercomputer and destroy it. We bring you our Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning IMAX review.
Ethan Hunt and the IMF team must track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity if it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, a deadly race around the globe begins.
Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than the mission — not even the lives of those he cares about most.
Delayed by the pandemic a film about a sentient AI that has the power to control all of the worlds assets seems more scarier in a world that now has ChatGPT within it.
Tom Cruise still doing his own stunts that always seem bigger, better and more dangerous than previous Mission Impossible instalments will never cease to amaze me. The fact he can jump off a cliff on a bike and act whilst doing so really does cement him as one of cinemas last great action heroes. They just don’t make them like him anymore and with how soft the world is getting I doubt there will be many like him in the future either!
Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie arrive on the inaugural flight at Abu Dhabi International Airport’s New Midfield Terminal in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on June 25, 2023, in advance of the “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” Abu Dhabi Premiere presented by Paramount Pictures and Skydance.
A charismatic performance goes wonderfully with a new addition in the shape of Hayley Atwell. Her character Grace is a pickpocket that has picked the wrong thing this time and suddenly gets in way deep over her head in this game of cat and mouse for a two (split into two pieces) that unlocks the supercomputer Entity currently sentient and lying at the bottom of the sea in a Russian Submarine.
The mission, should you choose to accept it, is disengage your brain and enjoy the beauty of this movie on the big screen where IMAX took me straight into the heart of the action. With the franchise constantly bouncing around locations across the world we get to see the brand new Abu Dhabi airport terminal for the first time on the big screen, Rome and even take a trip on the Orient Express.
Some scenes of the Abu Dhabi airport were actually shot in Birmingham train station where the main station area has beautiful architecture that was blended in with Abu Dhabi airport signing and more and it blends perfectly. You wouldn’t know for one second that it wasn’t shot in Abu Dhabi. I still wonder why they shot in Birmingham, UK of all places because as far as more UK scenes go in the movie there really isn’t one.
I’d love to know why they flew production out to the UK to shoot that specifically there. It just isn’t in the film long enough for it to be worth flying over with nothing else whatsoever that I could see on screen looking like it was shot in the UK. But hey, I wasn’t on production. I’d love to know the reason though!
Atwell’s character was breathtaking to watch and her chemistry with Cruise was instantly noticeable and already we now have a stronger female lead than any of the other female characters to grace the franchise. The tension was palpable the stakes were high and the acting performances were equal to it.
You’d think the franchise would tire now and again and whilst its had little stumble instalments it always stays relevant and the stunts alone are their own centerpiece and selling point of the movie. Like a grand finale where the stuntman puts on his biggest stunt to date is basically what Tom Cruise does on a movie by movie basis.
With this movie only being a part 1 or 2 it does make you wonder what the next big stunt will be from the now 62 year old powerhouse.
Where Dead Reckoning (and many other Mission Impossible movies) fail is where they try to explain what is going on. Suspense, intrigue and action take priority over simple explanations and not once do we know what the Entity really is and what sort of damage it’s doing.
Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell in Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One from Paramount Pictures and Skydance.
At the moment we’re told that it has the power to control the world but if it’s sentient it just seems to be waiting to be caught. Why not just get on with it already if it clearly has the capability to do such things. It’s literally waiting for Ethan Hunt to get to it and shut it down.
Poor explanation and arc aside there is a hollowness that the lack of story leaves within the movie but who cares, it’s on a big IMAX screen and looks incredible right?!
I do wish that trailers would back down on showing the best stunts and even having Tom Cruise a year ago on UK TV shows discussing the very big stunt (with footage being shown might I add) and spoiling it all in the process. I know for sure if I had seen that for the first time in a cinema as opposed to on a chat show I’d have been blown away for the first time seeing it on the big screen.
A franchise that for me still has enough legs to stretch to maybe another instalment after part 2 but it’s slowly starting to rehash old lines and slowly (very slowly) starting to feel a little repetitive.
Tom Cruise plays Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part One from Paramount Pictures and Skydance.
I eagerly await part 2 of Dead Reckoning but along with the stellar cast line-up including Esai Morales, Vanessa Kirby, Henry Czerny, Frederick Schmidt, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Shea Whigham you’re in good hands for this first instalment and I’m committed enough to see how this mission ends.

Our Rating
Summary
Tom Cruise is back and kicking ass across the world in the latest instalment of the Mission Impossible franchise but it’s very slowly starting to feel repetitive with only new additions and bigger stunts keeping my attention focused throughout. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an incredible movie but it’s just starting to feel a little fatigued.
