But this oddball series will be unlike any HGTV series you know. A co-production of Showtime and A24, Stone and Fielder stars as Whitney and Asher, a husband and wife duo who have just landed their own house-flipping series. Benny Safdie also stars as Dougie, the producer of Whitney and Asher’s “Flipanthropy” series, who harbors and holds onto his own secrets. Living in Española, N.M., the couple embarks on their new business venture while trying to have a baby, seemingly met by an alleged curse that promises to “disturb the relationship.” Additional actors in the series include Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi (“Captain Phillips”), Emmy nominee Corbin Bernsen, and Constance Shulman.
Here’s the official synopsis:
THE CURSE is a genre-bending SHOWTIME® series that explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring in their new home-improvement show. The series stars Oscar® winner Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder, and Benny Safdie. Guest stars include Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi, Emmy® nominee Corbin Bernsen, and Constance Shulman. Produced by A24, THE CURSE is co-created and executive-produced by Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder, who also serves as a director. Emma Stone executive produces alongside Dave McCary and Ali Herting through their Fruit Tree banner. Josh Safdie also serves as executive producer.
“The Curse” will make its world premiere at the New York Film Festival beforehand on October 12, basically a whole month before its TV premiere, which should be a real treat for cineastes who rarely get to see TV work at NYFF (an exception was clearly made).
