Neil Gaiman Offers To Exit Good Omens Season 3 Amid Allegations
Sep 12, 2024
Prime Video’s Good Omens is headed for its third and final season on the Amazon streamer, but a very personal matter is holding back production. Neil Gaiman, the showrunner, writer, and executive producer of the series, has been accused of sexual assault and abuse by numerous women. Due to those allegations, Amazon has paused pre-production on Season 3, but Gaiman has made an offer that could allow Good Omens to get its final run on the platform.
Per Deadline, Gaiman made an offer to take a step back from the final season of the Prime Video series so that production on Season 3 of Good Omens can resume. While this might sound like an admission of some guilt on Gaiman’s part regarding the sexual assault allegations, that is not the case, and he continues to deny all the accusations made against him. This appears to be a move on Gaiman’s part to allow the Terry Pratchett adaptation to continue towards its planned conclusion.
Four Women Have Made Allegations Against Neil Gaiman
Details of the allegations were given on a podcast by Tortoise Media, which referenced two women who accused Gaiman of sexual assault and abuse. The first incident was attributed to a woman named Scarlett who claimed the author assaulted her while she was working as his nanny in New Zealand in 2022. Another woman, identified as K, detailed meeting Gaiman at a book signing in Florida in 2003 when she was 18. While the relationship was consensual, K revealed that Gaiman had her engage in rough sex with him that she “neither wanted nor enjoyed.” In the wake of these allegations, two more women have come forward.
The first project of Gaiman’s to be put on hold following the allegations was a feature adaptation of his YA novel The Graveyard Book, which was set to move forward at Disney. The project was said to be in early development with no cast attached, although Marc Forster was said to be directing the adaptation with David Magee on board to pen the script. It’s unclear when – or if – Disney will resume development on the project.
Good Omens was renewed for a third and final season just last year, and Gaiman gave the impression before the allegations came out that it would begin shooting at the top of 2025 in Scotland. The situation with Good Omens is a bit different from the adaptation of The Graveyard Book for Disney because, beyond being the author of the source material, Gaiman wasn’t as heavily involved with the project. In the case of Good Omens, he’s an executive producer, writer, and showrunner, so Amazon likely believes that if it can continue, it would need to do so without his involvement – a possibility that Gaiman’s offer certainly opens up.
Based on the novel Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the series follows an Angel (Michael Sheen) and a Demon (David Tennant) who are very happy living on Earth and must team up when the apocalypse threatens their comfortable living quarters. In addition to Sheen and Tennant, the series also stars Jon Hamm, Miranda Richardson, and Frances McDormand.
