Netflix One Piece Producers Reveal How Many Seasons They Want for the Live-Action Series
Sep 27, 2023
Summary
Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece has become a massive success, surpassing popular shows and generating positive feedback from fans and critics. Producers Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements have expressed their desire for the show to have multiple seasons, potentially covering only half of the manga’s chapters. The second season of One Piece will likely continue the story with the Straw Hat Pirates escaping from the Navy and facing other pirates in their quest for the One Piece treasure.
Netflix’s One Piece has become one of the biggest hits from the streaming giant, not only of this year, but from the entire history of the platform. The live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s popular manga and anime has finally managed to leave failures like Death Note and Cowboy Bebop behind, proving the legendary Japanese style can be adapted properly to a non-animated format in Hollywood. And producers Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements have now teased how many seasons they’d like to see happen.
The first season of the show surpassed both Stranger Things and Wednesday, two of the most watched shows on the catalog, becoming the first ever series to occupy the number one spot in the Netflix ‘Top 10’ in 84 countries. Besides the good numbers, the series was amazingly well-received by the fans and critics, generating nothing but positive comments about its casting, story development, production design, and more.
That’s why the audience is waiting for the streaming platform to finally confirm the second season renewal, and the team behind the show is also hoping to get to do more than two outings. Way more, actually. While speaking to Deadline, producers Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements revealed they have already had conversations with showrunner Matt Owens about how long the show could go on:
“We’re over 1,080 chapters at this point in the manga… We have plans with Matt Owens for how we would break multiple seasons, and I think even if we did six seasons, we would probably only use up half of the chapters of the manga. It really could go on and on and on. Everything we do is in concert with Netflix, [manga publisher] Shueisha and Oda-san, they are a part of that conversation.
We’ve definitely had more thorough conversations about what we would do with Season 2 should we have the opportunity, and then less extensive conversations about where we would go for season three to six. The one thing I would say, we’re all unified in the parts of the manga that you just absolutely cannot eliminate, and that’s our guiding principle, the stories that we know and the characters that we know are important to the fans. So that really is the start in breaking future seasons. It will require a lot of conversations, but we feel lucky to have the roadmap.”

What Would a Potential Second Season of One Piece Be About?
Netflix
If there is something that Netflix won’t be lacking if they try to continue with One Piece, that’s source material, since Oda’s manga has published 106 volumes, with the anime has releasing 1,075 episodes. However, the big challenge for the live-action is choosing the right stories to tell. But they may already know what comes next, since the scripts for a potential second installment are ready to go.
Minor SPOILERS incoming as at the end of the first batch of episodes, Luffy finally managed to be recognized as a pirate, with his face appearing on a wanted poster. The Straw Hat Pirates crew finally feels like a unit, they have their ship, and they are ready to head to the Grand Line in search for the One Piece.
The second season will surely pick up after those events, with Luffy and company escaping from the Navy, while other pirates also try to destroy them and be the ones to get their hands on the precious treasure.
The first season of One Piece is now available to stream on Netflix.
