Petition to Save the Canceled Show Hits Huge Milestone
Sep 9, 2024
Fans of the Prime Video fantasy show, My Lady Jane, are circulating a petition online to save the series following its cancelation. The series was unexpectedly canceled after its short, eight-episode run in June. Now fans have launched a multi-level campaign to revive the series for a second season. The online petition is credited to a Lauren Mullaney. In the “Why This Petition Matters” section, the organizers write:
Renewing ‘My Lady Jane’ would not just please fans, it would also generate a significant amount of traffic and viewership benefits for the streaming platform. We are calling upon Amazon Prime to listen to the voices of fans around the globe and confirm the renewal of ‘My Lady Jane’ for a second season.
The petition on change.org has garnered over 60,000 signatures (and still growing). However, the fans aren’t stopping there. They have created a Linktree directing fans to other platforms where they can show support and challenge the cancelation. The petitioners have been rating and reviewing My Lady Jane on IMDb, Prime Video, and RottenTomatoes to show love for the series. The Linktree also provides petitioners with email templates to be sent to Amazon COO Albert Cheng, so that they can express their grievances directly and succinctly. Here is part of the email template:
I am writing to express my deep frustration and disappointment over the cancelation of My Lady Jane on Prime Video. As a loyal Prime Video member, I am genuinely shocked by this decision, and I am seriously considering ending my membership. I did not expect this from Amazon or Prime, companies that usually claim to value their customers. This cancelation and the widespread outcry it has sparked clearly show otherwise.
Why Was My Lady Jane Canceled So Soon?
Based on the novel of the same name by Cynthia Hand, My Lady Jane is a fantasy re-imagining of the succession crisis in 16th-century Tudor England. The whimsical story takes the real-life historical figures and places them in a YA fairy tale with some romance and magic woven in. Lady Jane Grey, played by Emily Bader, is based on the real historical Lady Jane Grey. She was the great-niece to King Henry VIII – the one with all the wives – cousin to King Edward VI, Queen Mary I, and Queen Elizabeth I. The reception and online engagement with the show were very positive. My Lady Jane’s has a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Jane is famously and sadly remembered as the shortest ever reigning monarch, claiming the crown in 1553 at age 16 and ruling for only nine days before Mary I aka “Bloody Mary” executed her. The series naturally featured other key historical players: Mary Tudor (Kate O’Flynn), Bess aka Elizabeth (Abbie Hern), and Edward (Jordan Peters) and the quintessential YA love interest, Lord Guildford Dudley (Edward Bluemel). Historically, Lady Jane Greay is remembered as a sympathetic figure; a young girl at the mercy of her guardians and the political machinations of powerful nobles around her. In this way, history repeats itself as My Lady Jane time is taken too soon. Prime noted the series’ low viewership was their reasoning for the cancelation. This, however, did not satisfy viewers as they felt the decision was premature. Reactions to the cancelation were seismic as viewers took to X, formerly Twitter, to air their grievances.
One factor that could have affected the show’s viewership is competition. My Lady Jane premiered on June 27, just two weeks after Bridgerton Season 3 – Part 2 was released. The show is very similar to the Netflix series as both are period-piece adaptations of books that heavily feature romance and diverse casting. There would likely be some overlap in audience. However, rather than drawing in the Bridgerton viewers, the timing of the show’s release may have been a hindrance for viewers who may have found My Lady Jane appealing, but ultimately could not divide their screen time between the two series.
My Lady Jane was also released while The Boys season 4 was airing. Prime’s marketing and publicity for The Boys Season 4 was extensive. This may have limited the resources for promoting and public exposure to the quirky, fantasy show. The initial trailers for the series also failed to portray the more fantastical elements of the story, thus failing to represent the series accurately and attract other fanbases than just period romance enthusiasts.
It is unclear how effective the campaign will be. Prime video is likely aware of the campaign to #SaveMyLadyJane. It could be difficult financially for the streamer considering all the other high concept original series Prime is producing, like Fallout, The Boys, and Invincible. However, it could also be a good move as Prime is getting some heat after initial reactions to Season 2 of their other fantasy series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, tickle in. Season 2 currently has a 58% Rotten Tomatoes Score, well below My Lady Jane’s score. Perhaps Prime should work to retain this evidently dedicated and mobilized fanbase now that it has been put much more prominently into the public eye following its cancelation.
