Pharrell, Maren Morris, And, Yes, Diane Warren Earn Original Song Oscars Shortlist Mentions

Dec 19, 2024

It’s not even about stopping Diane Warren from landing another Oscar nomination for Original Song. At this point, we simply cannot contain her. The now 15-time nominee and honorary Oscar winner has yet another contender in the mix, “The Journey,” from Tyler Perry’s period drama “The Six Triple Eight.” Co-written by H.E.R., who actually won this category in 2021, the track is one of 15 Original Song compositions to make the Music Branch’s 2025 shortlist.

Other notable songs that made the shortlist include “Piece by Piece” by Pharrell Williams from “Piece by Piece”; “Kiss the Sky” by Kris Bowers and Maren Morris from “The Wild Robot”; “Like a Bird” by Abraham Alexander and Adrian Quesada from “Sing Sing”; “Tell Me It’s You” by Lin-Manuel Miranda from “Mufasa: The Lion King,”; and two, yes, two songs from “Emilia Perez,” “El Mal” and “Mi Camino.”

Oh, and in case you were unaware, there were no qualifying songs from “Wicked.” However, two new songs will debut in “Wicked: For Good” next November.

In a massive surprise, Miley Cyrus, Andrew Wyatt, and Lykke Li were snubbed for their song “Beautiful That Way,” from Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl.”

Overall, “Emilia Perez” led all films with six mentions in the 10 categories. “Wicked” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” earned 4 while “Dune: Part Two,” “Gladiator II,” “The Wild Robot,” “Alien: Romulus,” and “Blitz” earned 3 each. “Nosferatu,” “Mufasa: The Lion King,” “The Six Triple Eight,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Sing Sing,” “Better Man,” “Dahomey,” and “Challengers” earned 2 respectively.

The complete list of Original Song shortlist mentions are as follows:

“Forbidden Road” from “Better Man”
“Winter Coat” from “Blitz”
“Compress/Repress” from “Challengers”
“Never Too Late” from “Elton John: Never Too Late”
