If there’s any genre that shows no sign of slowing down, it’s true crime. Everywhere you look, there’s a new podcast about a mysterious disappearance or a TV show documenting an unsolved murder. Audiences eat that stuff up because they can feel like a part of the action. “Well, I think so-and-so was the killer because…” Some depict the cold actions of hardened criminals, while others take a more sympathetic route and tell stories of the victims.
True crime has been around for decades, with shows like Forensic Files being one of the earlier and most well-known adaptations. However, the genre has experienced a boom in recent years, primarily due to the rise of podcasts and streamers like Netflix and their endless true crime content. While some programs depict solved cases, others explore those that are still open. Sometimes, the popularity of a true crime program will even lead to a cold case being reopened.
That brings us to Hulu’s latest true crime addition, Under the Bridge, depicting the brutal murder of 14-year-old Reena Virk in 1997. The show is adapted from the same name book by late novelist Rebecca Godfrey. Development of a film based on Godfrey’s book began back in 2010 before stalling for several years. While Virk’s case has been solved, true crime fans will likely want to see the process play out. So with that, let’s look at everything we know about Hulu’s Under the Bridge.
Under the Bridge: The Plot
Simon & Schuster
Specific plot details remain unknown, but we can look to Godfrey’s book to understand what to expect. Under the Bridge was Godfrey’s second book and a winner of a national nonfiction award in Canada in 2006. In the book, Godfrey investigates and documents the murder of Reena Virk.
Reena Virk was the daughter of an Indian immigrant and a Jehovah’s Witness in a predominantly Sikh community in British Columbia. Virk did not fit in with her peers and suffered constant bullying over her physical appearance. In November 1997, she was invited to a party by a friend and subsequently heavily beaten by a group of girls. Virk got away, but two group members followed her as she left. They beat her a second time to the point of unconsciousness and rolled her body into a nearby waterway. The girls who first beat Virk were sentenced to short jail stays for the assault. One male participant in the second beating and death, Warren Glowatski, was convicted in 1999 and released on parole in 2010. His co-conspirator, Kelly Ellard, was tried three times before being convicted.

Believed to be racially motivated, Virk’s case became a national tragedy in Canada due to the brutality and the young ages of the victim and killers. We don’t know how exactly the series will approach the case, but we know it will run for eight episodes. Since it is a scripted drama, it likely will not take an analytical approach to the case. Instead, there will probably be more emphasis on the case’s real-life characters, humanity, and tragedy. We can expect it to depict both Reena’s life before her killing and the murder and its aftermath.
Additional plot details will likely follow as production continues.
Under the Bridge: The Cast
Netflix
While the miniseries tells the story of Reena Virk’s murder, the lead character is author Rebecca Godfrey. Daisy Jones & The Six star Riley Keough portrays Godfrey as she investigates the murder and reveals dark secrets about the teenage killers. Unfortunately, Godfrey died in October 2022, just one month after Hulu announced the series.
Actor Chloe Guidry will appear as the sharp-tongued Josephine Bell. She’s a ward of the state and the leader of a group of girls at her local youth home. She aspires to lead a gang and grow up to be a hitman. B Positive actor Izzy G is Kelly Ellard, the best friend of Josephine and the one who drowned Virk. Ezra Farouke Khan plays Manjit Virk, Reena’s father, who wants to understand his daughter during a difficult period in her life.

The Good Wife’s Archie Panjabi is set to play Suman Virk, Reena’s mother. Along with her husband, she tries to understand Reena and control her after her teenage rebellion. The miniseries will explore Manjit and Suman’s lives before and after Reena’s death. Vritika Gupta is Reena Virk, the troubled teen and murder victim. We will see Reena’s early life as she’s desperate to escape her strict religious upbringing. That need for escapism leads her to the group home, where she encounters Bell, Ellard, and others.
Euphoria’s Javon Walton is Warren Glowatski. He appears soft-spoken and gentle on the surface, but that facade hides something sinister, as he and Ellard committed the murder. Actor Aiyana Goodfellow is Dusty, a friend of Reena and the third wheel in Josephine and Kelly’s friendship. She’s haunted by the guilt of the murder and must decide whether she can turn on her friends. Finally, Lily Gladstone rounds out the cast as Cam Bentland, a queer woman of color on the local police force. She believes in the justice system, even if it doesn’t serve people like her, and begins questioning the status quo throughout the investigation.
