Prime Video Delays Release Of ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ With Donald Glover & Maya Erskine To Early 2024

Sep 18, 2023

With both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes still ongoing, more and more titles set for release this Fall now have 2024 bows. The latest project pushed back? THR reports that Prime Video‘s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine now premieres early next year instead of its original November release date.

A remake of Doug Liman‘s 2005 romantic comedy with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the series stars Glover and Erskine as two strangers matched by an agency to pose as a married couple as they carry out international espionage. Glover also co-creatives and executive produces the series with Francesca Sloane. Read a synopsis for the series below:
Meet the Smiths: Two strangers, John and Jane, who have given up their identities to be thrown together as partners — in espionage and in marriage. Matched by a mysterious agency, each episode follows them on a new mission and new milestone in their relationship. When the cracks begin to show through, they must fight to stay together. Because in this marriage, divorce is not an option.
“Mr. & Mrs. Smith” continues Glover’s creative relationship with Amazon after “Guava Island” and “Swarm.” Amazon released a first look at the series on Prime Day with its November release date. But with no end to the strikes in sight, Amazon suspended Glover’s overall deal with the studio, along with several other producers. Bear in mind, it’s common practice to put deals like this on hold if the creator isn’t working on anything amid the strikes. Said one Amazon executive: “If you were in active post or production on something and willing to work [in a non-writing capacity], we’d keep paying you. If you didn’t have anything or didn’t want to work, we stopped.”
But just because Glover has his current deal suspended doesn’t mean that “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” isn’t ready for audiences. It’s more that streamers and studios need to adjust their release calendar to accommodate the work stoppage caused by the strikes. And that affects everyone, including another actor-producer with an Amazon overall deal, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who was once attached to Glover’s series but exited in 2021. But Waller-Bridge explained to THR afterward that her exit was a cordial one. “I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it — still care about it,” said Waller-Brdige. “And I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of a vision. Creative collaboration is like a marriage, and some marriages don’t work out.”
But in the case of the marriage between Glover and Erksine’s John and Jane Smith, Prime Video subscribers will need to wait until early 2024 to see if theirs works out.
