Quantum Leap Stars Unpack the Chemistry and Mystery Between Ben and Hannah

Nov 23, 2023

Talk about fun creative leaps. NBC’s revamped Quantum Leap had enough spunk before episode six of the current season, but with the recent return of Eliza Taylor’s Hannah, the show entered new territory and gave Raymond Lee’s time-traveling Ben a possible recurring connection.

Episode six found Ben leaping back to Princeton University in 1955, where he was tasked to find a formula hidden by Albert Einstein. That formula holds the key to nuclear energy, and it’s best to find it before the Nazis do. The twist? Ben runs into Hannah on campus, whom he met in another time period several years prior. Ben and Hannah work together to find the secret formula, but there’s a bigger reveal at the end of the episode: Ben and Hannah kiss.

There are sparks. Surely, this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Hannah. Fans sure want more and to understand what role Hannah may play in Ben’s time-leaping odyssey. There are also wild fan theories that Hannah may be somebody other than who she appears to be. Stars Raymond Lee and Eliza Taylor unpack some of these twists in this exclusive MovieWeb interview.

Is This the Last We’ve Seen of Hannah?
Quantum Leap (2022) Release Date September 19, 2022 Cast Raymond Lee, Mason Alexander Park, Caitlin Bassett, Eliza Taylor, Peter Gadiot, Ernie Hudson Main Genre Sci-Fi Seasons 2
“Ben would certainly love to see more of Hannah,” Raymond Lee shared. “It’s the first time Ben has been able to run into someone in his leaps where there’s a history that’s building. There’s a relationship that’s forming, and he gets to physically be with somebody, which is something that he hasn’t had in the past. So, I think it’s very appealing, but as far as the future of it goes, who knows?” Eliza Taylor is hopeful about that possibility:

I just love being a part of this show. This is like one of the best casts I’ve worked with and, for me, personally, the more Hannah, the better. I’m loving it. So, I’d love to see more of her on the show, so I get to keep working on it.

Season two is fast approaching its ending point. Showrunner Dean Georgaris and executive producer Martin Gero shot seasons one and two back to back as a precaution to the SAG-AFTRA strike, but Lee teases some surprises ahead. “The writers were very intentional about really building the emotional journeys of each character,” he said. “And now that we’ve established the mythology and how the quantum accelerator works, how time travel works, and we’ve established the rules, now we get to play within it.”

Like most great stories, the relationships within them become more complex and deeper, he was quick to add. “We’re adding drama, some fuel to giant fires that we have to put out, and we have to continue to keep going. With the addition of Eliza and Peter Gadiot [as Army Intelligence Officer Tom Westfall], our show has now added the complexity and excitement that we need. We’ve also used the momentum from the first season into this season, and we’ve all figured out what we’re really good at.”

Season 2 Fan Theories and More
NBC

Now that the character of Hannah has made two appearances in different timelines, chances are she and Ben will meet again. This creative addition has sparked a bevy of fan theories with many viewers suggesting Hannah may not be who she really appears to be. They range from downright curious — that in the future, Hannah will return as AI and help Ben again — to truly bonkers.

“The one [theory] that I really enjoyed was that somehow Hannah is Sam Beckett,” Taylor shared, referring to the original show’s Quantum Leaper played by Scott Bakula. It’s a fascinating theory and puts a big spin on pre-conceived perceptions of relationships.

NBC

It’s still too soon to tell, but even Lee and Taylor cannot deny the chemistry their characters have, or, in fact, that they have themselves, starring alongside each other. “I’ve always been told that Eliza’s amazing,” Lee said. “And from our chemistry read — the purposes of that read was to understand chemistry — and I felt chemistry. Eliza’s such a pro and so open. She’s such a great listener and very fun to be in scenes with.”

“Ray is a very generous scene partner and has made me feel very safe and secure, and given me lots of space to play in our scenes together,” Taylor admitted. “I feel very lucky.”

Why Fans Are Tuning in to Quantum Leap

There has yet to be an announcement about season three for the series, but it’s hard to imagine NBC would stop the leaping. When asked what he felt viewers have resonated with in this new iteration of Quantum Leap, Lee said, “I think there’s just the overall excitement of seeing a period piece every week. Somebody leaping and traveling through time is certainly exciting. But at the core of it, I think we’re so far apart […] on ideas, on points of view.” He continued:

“And sometimes it takes the witnessing of one specific story in one person’s life to see that we’re all just kind of connected, and we’re all dealing with the same things. That’s my way into the show. That’s my way into each body I leap into and each story. I feel very fortunate we get to tell a story about empathy each time. If there is a superpower that Ben has, it is perhaps that. That’s something everyone could use a little bit more of. I think people can connect on a very human level in a very fantastic universe.”

If acting is a kind of tourism of empathy, then traveling from body to body is truly a world tour, and the actors do it wonderfully here. Quantum Leap airs Wednesdays at 8pm ET/PT on NBC, before streaming on Peacock the next day. Click the link below to watch the series:
