Natasha Lyonne, Christina Applegate & Jenna Ortega Were Among the 2024 Emmy Nominees
Poker Face Release Date January 26, 2023 Creator Rian Johnson

Created by Rian Johnson for the streaming service Peacock, Poker Face finds Natasha Lyonne leading the way as Charlie Cale, a cocktail waitress who possesses the uncanny ability to tell when someone is lying. Ergo, she can see right through anyone’s poker face. A charming modern throwback to the mystery detective tales of old, Poker Face is a murder mystery series that uses a case-of-the-week format as Charlie flees across the United States on the run from a casino boss. Poker Face was met with critical acclaim, with much praise being heaped on Lyonne’s performance, and a second season is now on the way.

Jenna Ortega, one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood right now, was also among the nominees for her lead performance in the smash-hit Netflix series, Wednesday. Premiering on the streaming platform back in 2022, Wednesday comes from the mind of director Tim Burton, and revolves around a teenage Wednesday Addams, who attempts to solve a murder mystery at her new school, Nevermore Academy.

Wednesday saw huge success on Netflix, becoming the second-most watched English-language series ever on the platform, and receiving two Golden Globe nominations for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy for Ortega. The series has now sparked its own franchise, with a spinoff centered on Uncle Fester now in the works.

The rest of the nominees this year included Christina Applegate for her role as Jen Harding in the Netflix series Dead to Me, Rachel Brosnahan for her performance as Miriam “Midge” Maisel in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Quinta Brunson for her performance as Janine Teagues in ABC’s Abbott Elementary. It was Brunson, in a surprising win, who pulled ahead of the pack to dominate the night. People may remember her for that awkward win two years ago, when Jimmy Kimmel pretended to be dead on the floor as she accepted her award. Well now, it’s just Quinta, alone at that stage, and she deserves it.
