Remembering Tina Turner At the Movies

May 27, 2023

Movie fans, as most everyone today, are saddened by the passing of Tina Turner, the Queen of Rock and Roll. Putting aside her wonderfully camp contributions to cinema as an actress, let’s remember her through the tracks the movies just had to plumb. We’ve created a playlist below of the Tina Turner songs put to best use in the movies. And when you’ve played live for the movies, lip-synced for the movies, been covered in Pitch Perfect for the movies, been honoured for the movies and such and such and such, whittling things down to album length isn’t as easy as it may seem.

There would simply be no playlist without acknowledging Tina’s appearance on screen in The Who’s Tommy, singing a wild belter called Acid Queen.

She was similarly prominent in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, with both the classic We Don’t Need Another Hero and the underrated One of the Living. Somehow, Turner still outperforms her songs on the soundtrack with her screen presence as Aunty Entity.

Goldeneye, title track to the 007 film, was one of her vampiest songs ever, if you can imagine, with music by Bono and lyrics by the Edge. A Bond song is one of the most front-and-centre positions for a track in all of cinema. Bond movies always start with an action pre-amble, but they don’t start till the lady sings, and Tina’s husky voice over blaring trumpets set audiences up for new age Bond, as the USSR crumbles in the title sequence, we’re trained to consider: enemies are harder to spot than ever before. Plus, it’s catchy as hell.

What’s Love Got to Do With It we’ve taken from Turner’s biopic of the same name, which may be cheating, but if you take issue with this, there are plenty of other movies to reminisce about. One of her earliest soundtrack inclusions, at first glance seems like any old late 60s trash, but upon further inspection this is trash of distinction: Mondo Trasho, featuring Turner’s Finger Poppin’, is the work of John Waters, and starring no less than Devine. This tune has the 60s soul sound we wouldn’t hear much of in Tina’s film career (aka post-super-stardom).

Proud Mary by Creedence Clearwater Revival is a stone-cold classic, but when it comes to movie soundtracks, it’s a strictly Turner affair (most famously in joyful comedies like Flushed Away and Miss Congeniality 2, where all of the drag queens backstage argue over who gets to karaoke Proud Mary first, with an undercover Regina King winning). The Proud Mary movie, itself a throwback to blaxploitation heroines, owes its title association much more to Turner than to Creedence. The Ultimate is still her performing the song in all its glory at a Rolling Stones show for Gimme Shelter.

Another concert film, Soul to Soul was filmed in Ghana, and of course was named after Tina and Ike’s duet. Her rendition of Come Together made it into the experimental documentary All This and World War II, which juxtaposed footage of the second world war with the hits of the Beatles. Phenomenal song, spirited performance, bizarre context. Perfect. Elton John’s Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds may have won the charts, but this is good stuff. She also performed the title track for the ill-fated Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band movie musical, mostly notable for her company on the track (see the full list at the bottom).

Two of her songs show up in Summer Lovers, you’d think a dubious honour were it not for fellow graduate Michael Sembelo, who would go on to cut Maniac (and much of the Flashdance soundtrack), while playing for Stevie Wonder. Turner’s selections for Summer Lovers, ‘Johnny and Mary’ and ‘Crazy in the Night’, are spectacularly 80s.

Occasionally more important even than a Bond song, is a Disney song. Tina featured prominently alongside Phil Collins for the Brother Bear track Great Spirits. More recently, Jules et Jon is all about rock n roll, with a plot centred on resurrecting Janis Joplin and John Lennon. Tina’s Workin’ Together slides into the playlist. A more classic tune still is The Best, which heightens a knocked-out Ryan Reynolds’ daydream, wherein the titular hitman of The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard at last respects him.

A better received feature, was the anthology film All the Invisible Children. It’s directors included: Mehdi Charef, Emir Kusturica, Spike Lee, Kátia Lund, Jordan Scott, Ridley Scott, Stefano Veneruso and John Woo. Tina provided the theme for the film with Teach Me Again.

And now, as promised, the songs’ full credits: The Bee Gees, Peter Frampton, Frankie Howerd, Sandy Farina, Paul Nicholas, Peter Allen, Keith Allison, George Benson, Elvin Bishop, Stephen Bishop, Jack Bruce, Keith Carradine, Carol Channing, Charlotte Crossley, Sharon Redd, Ula Hedwig, Jim Dandy, Sarah Dash, Rick Derringer, Barbara Dickson, Donovan, Randy Edelman, Yvonne Elliman, José Feliciano, Leif Garrett, Geraldine Granger, Adrian Gurvitz, Billy Harper, Eddie Harris, Heart, Nona Hendryx, Barry Humphries, Etta James, Dr. John, Bruce Johnston, Joe Lala, D.C. LaRue, Jo Leb, Marcella Detroit, Mark Lindsay, Nils Lofgren, Jackie Lomax, John Mayall, Curtis Mayfield, “”Cousin Brucie’ Morrow’, Peter Noone, Alan O’Day, Lee Oskar, Andy Paley, Jonathan Paley, Robert Palmer, Anita Pointer, Bonnie Raitt, Helen Reddy, Minnie Riperton, Chita Rivera, Johnny Rivers, Monti Rock III, Danielle Rowe, Sha-Na-Na, Del Shannon, Joe Simon, Jim Seals, Dash Crofts, Connie Stevens, Al Stewart, John Stewart, Frankie Valli, Gwen Verdon, Diane Vincent, Grover Washington Jr., Hank Williams Jr., Johnny Winter, Wolfman Jack, Bobby Womack, Alan White, Lenny White, Margaret Whiting, Gary Wright, Carolyn Stellar, George Burns and the inimitable Tina Turner.
