Rumored Writer Denies Involvement After Rumblings Of BTS Drama
Jul 18, 2023
The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin denies his involvement in the Borderlands movie. Written and directed by Eli Roth, the Borderlands movie is based on the popular video game series of the same name developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K. Mazin, who is known for creating Chernobyl and adapting The Last of Us video game into the hit HBO series alongside Neil Druckmann, was initially credited as a co-writer on the Borderlands movie, though his name has since been removed and replaced by the apparent pseudonym Joe Crombie.

During a recent interview with Variety discussing the 24 Emmy nominations for The Last of Us, Mazin spoke out about his supposed involvement in the Borderlands movie. The Last of Us showrunner denied his involvement, saying he is “not a credited writer on the film” and “cannot claim any kind of authorship” of the Borderlands movie. Mazin says that if the name “Joe Crombie” is in fact a pseudonym, it’s not his. Read his full statement below:
I am not a credited writer on the film, so I cannot claim any kind of authorship of Borderlands, much less “co-writing.” I did see the report about the pseudonym, which is false. I did not use a pseudonym. If the name in question is indeed a pseudonym, all I can say is… it’s not mine.
Everything We Know About The Borderlands Movie
With a story loosely based on the video games, the Borderlands movie follows Lilith as she reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to search for Atlas’ abducted daughter, forming unexpected alliances with Roland, Tiny Tina, Kreig, Tannis, and Claptrap. The Borderlands cast is led by the Academy Award-winning Cate Blanchett alongside Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, and Édgar Ramírez. The film is directed by Roth, who made a name for himself with horror films like Hostel, and is also the only credited writer alongside Joe Crombie, which is likely a pseudonym.

A recent report claimed the Borderlands movie is currently in “post-production hell” due to a series of rewrites and reshoots. It was confirmed the Borderlands movie brought on Deadpool director Tim Miller for reshoots since Roth was busy preparing his next horror film. Other writers who were reportedly hired to work on the film include Gary Ross, Zak Olkewicz, Aaron Berg, Oren Uziel, Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Chris Bremner, and Sam Levinson, none of which are actually credited. Despite the tumultuous post-production process, Jamie Lee Curtis still believes the Borderlands movie will be released next year.
