Secret Invasion Director Was Told to Not Read The Comics

Sep 2, 2023

Secret Invasion is coming to Disney+ on June 21, bringing Samuel L. Jackson back to the fore in the MCU. Having been mostly missing in action for the last few years, Jackson’s Nick Fury is finally getting his own series, and like many Marvel projects the story is based on a comic book arc of the same name. However, fans of the Secret Invasion comic story shouldn’t expect this to be an exact replication, as director Ali Selim recently revealed to Screen Rant that he was told not to read the iconic story that the latest MCU offering is based on. He said:

“When I took on this job as director, I didn’t write the script. So a lot of those decisions were made by Kyle Bradstreet and the other team of writers that we had. The first thing I was told is don’t read the comics. It had nothing to do with what we’re trying to do here. This story was really born out of the electricity created between Sam Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn or Nick Fury and Talos in Captain Marvel. And they said, “Oh, we got to do something with that.” So they found a story that would serve that relationship and would expand the MCU and other characters who are not in the comic books. I think it’s a story unto itself.”

Marvel Studios have mostly played fast and loose with their adaptations of some of Marvel’s biggest stories, including Infinity War, using the base story and weaving it into the fabric of the MCU and the changes it has made to some of the source material. It looks like Secret Invasion will be following the pattern to the letter.

Secret Invasion Has Not Made a Good Impression With Critics.
Disney+

Although the majority of people are still to get their first look at Secret Invasion, early reviews have been decidedly mixed, with reviews either hailing the show as the greatest MCU project ever made while others just don’t seem to be buying the espionage plot.

Fans have waited a long time for Samuel L. Jackson to get his first big lead as Nick Fury, and Secret Invasion is going to be both a deep dive into the life of Fury as well as a bridge to his next appearance in The Marvels later this year. The series will also set-up Armor Wars, the movie that will see Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes getting his own project after being an integral part of the MCU from the start.

Recently, there has been a huge difference in the opinions of critics and audiences, and there is a good chance that Secret Invasion could be another example. Either way, the show certainly seems to be bringing that good old Marvel action to the small screen, but also delivering something new in the form of a spy thriller. Marvel Studios has not always played it safe with their Disney+ TV shows, for better or worse, and Secret Invasion is their latest experiment .
