Seth MacFarlane Donates $1 Million to Support Film & Television Workers During Strikes

Aug 15, 2023

“Lucky there’s a family guy!” The lyrics of the FOX series’ theme song have never rung so true. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes show no sign of ending in the foreseeable future. But Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has stepped up to the plate to offer his support for creatives protesting on the picket lines.

According to an exclusive interview with Variety, MacFarlane has donated $1 million to The Entertainment Community Fund. And since Monday, May 1, more than 7,500 donors have contributed $6.3 million to support the film and television industry. Founded in 1882, the charitable organization began as The Actors Fund. Their mission statement reads:

“The Entertainment Community Fund fosters stability and resiliency, and provides a safety net for performing arts and entertainment professionals over their lifespan.”

The Entertainment Community Fund chair Annette Bening also said via a statement:

“The Entertainment Community Fund is overcome with gratitude to the prominent leaders in our community who have donated in support of film and television workers in need. Each day, the calls for help increase; these gifts will immediately assist so many in our industry who are still struggling to recover after the pandemic. We also hope that these impactful gifts will inspire others, if they can, to donate to support our crucial work.”

In addition to lending his financial support to The Entertainment Community Fund, MacFarlane has physically made his way to the picket lines. Once there, he took a photo of the Family Guy team he was so integral in creating and cultivating nearly 25 years ago.

Disney/ABC Domestic Television

Seth MacFarlane helped create one of the most memorable animated sitcoms of all time when Family Guy debuted in 1999. The creative mind behind the Griffin family and the zany characters of Spooner Street endure to this day — a total of 22 seasons and counting. And on Tuesday evening, MacFarlane posted a picture on his official Twitter account of the Family Guy team holding signs and supporting both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. MacFarlane tweeted:

“Back in 2010, I was one foot out the door gearing up for ‘Ted,’ with no sense yet of the future of the animated series without me. I needn’t have worried. The amazing team of writers, artists, actors, assistants, associates, production staff, etc. etc. were already steering the ship without me, and they’re still doing it today.”

MacFarlane continued:

“EVERYONE here deserves to make a comfortable living in the industry to which they give so much of themselves. Very proud to walk the picket line with this group today. None of them should have to wait any longer for a fair and equitable deal. Also, I’m so glad no one smelled the booze in my coffee.”

MacFarlane served as a showrunner on Family Guy through Season 5. The characters MacFarlane is best known for voicing include Peter, Stewie and Brian Griffin, and, of course, Glenn Quagmire — “Giggity!” Check out MacFarlane’s Twitter post from the picket lines in its entirety below:
