Seth MacFarlane’s Ted Scores Huge Streaming Chart Win for Peacock

Feb 12, 2024

Summary

Peacock scores big with Seth MacFarlane’s
Ted
series, landing in the Top Ten on Nielsen’s Streaming Originals chart.

Ted
‘s impressive viewership and positive reviews make a second season likely for the morally dubious bear.
MacFarlane stays true to the successful movie formula, delivering the same rude, crude humor and nostalgic Easter eggs for dedicated fans.

Seth MacFarlane’s Ted has delivered a huge win for Peacock in Nielsen’s Streaming Originals chart. The foul-mouthed bear was always going to be a small screen hit, with the combination of MacFarlane’s popular brand of juvenile adult humor and the large fan base of the Ted movies, but landing a place in the Top Ten is something that Peacock really isn’t used to when competing with the likes of Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video.

Ted Release Date January 11, 2024 Creator Seth MacFarlane Seasons 1 Studio Fuzzy Door Productions, MRC Television, Media Rights Capital (MRC)

As per TVLine, following its January 11 debut, Ted managed to draw in a viewing total of 542 minutes across its seven episodes in the first week on Peacock’s platform. This landed it in sixth position on the chart, just two places below Disney+’s Marvel Studios show Echo. While the numbers were nowhere near the billions of minutes of Netflix series Fool Me Once or Prime Video’s action juggernaut, Reacher, Ted managed to hold its own against the likes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians (618 million minutes), and Netflix’s The Crown (477 million minutes).

While there has been no word yet on whether Ted will get a second season, the impressive viewership, along with reviews that have surpassed those of both the original movie and its sequel, would suggest that Peacock would be foolish to not commission more from the loveable if morally dubious bear.

Ted Sticks to the Script and Lands a Huge Win

The transition from a popular movie to the format of a half-hour television show isn’t always a smooth one. There have been just as many failures as successes in recent years, with notable casualties being series such as Willow, True Lies and Heathers.

When it comes to Ted’s small screen venture, MacFarlane has not tampered with anything that made the movie a success. The rude, crude humor is still present, although with several notable scenes that are extracted directly from the films and retooled into this new prequel story to tie everything together in a way that gives just that little extra Easter egg for those who have followed Ted’s antics from the start.

Set in 1993, Ted sees John Bennett and his living, breathing bear heading off to college, where Ted really doesn’t want to be. Whether dealing with bullies, dealing in drugs, or proclaiming himself the “king of the wieners,” Ted’s antics are taken straight from MacFarlane’s top drawer, and the show plays straight into his audience’s hands.

MacFarlane, along with showrunners Brad Walsh and Paul Corrigan, has suggested that he is more than willing to visit more points in the lives of Ted and John if audiences prove that they want it. With this first round of viewing figures, it appears that audience has made its feelings known. Having completed with the big boys, the ball is very much now back in MacFarlane’s court, and there is a good chance that he will be getting a call from Peacock in the near future for a Season 2 order of Ted.

All seven episodes of
Ted
are streaming now on Peacock.
