Seth Rogen Teases the Chaos & “Manic Energy” of Apple TV+ Series ‘The Studio’

Feb 20, 2025

Seth Rogen

has revealed the uniquely chaotic approach to his new satirical Apple TV+ series, The Studio. Speaking recently with Esquire, Rogen revealed that every scene in the show will be filmed as one, long tracking shot, enabling audiences to fully immerse themselves in the “manic energy” of studio filmmaking.

“It’s a very funny role to me. Seeing the panic and the joy and the pride that comes with success, and the risk mitigation. How much they love visiting the set, and the tragedy of the fact that nobody wants them around—that’s inherently very funny.

We wanted the show to have an immersive, manic energy to it. Because that’s our experience, being in these rooms with people yelling at each other. We wanted to throw you into it and create this sort of unpredictable, uneasy energy.”

When you make a series about a Hollywood studio, you have to fill it with beloved actors and directors. The Studio makes good on that promise, and then some. Seth Rogen leads the cast, with Kathryn Hahn, Catherine O’Hara, Ike Barinholtz, and Chase Sui Wonders, in the supporting cast. But, the first trailer for the comedy series revealed the stacked A-list cameos scattered across the series. Bryan Cranston, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Martin Scorsese, Zach Efron, Charlize Theron, Anthony Mackie, and Ron Howard were all revealed in the first trailer. Their cameos are expected to be just the tip of the iceberg, with more revealed when The Studio premieres on March 26.
‘The Studio’ Features Fake Trailers…Including Diarrhea Zombie Movie ‘DUHPOCALYPSE’

As Apple TV+’s The Studio gives movie lovers a satirical inside look into the Hollywood system, it’s also teasing us with fake movie trailers that we really wish were real. At this year’s Super Bowl, Apple TV+ unveiled a new commercial for the show, which featured one of the aforementioned fake trailers. DUHPOCALYPSE, the name of the in-show movie revealed in the new commercial, stars Josh Hutcherson

and Johnny Knoxville

as two survivors of a deadly diarrhea zombie apocalypse. Yes, you read that right.
In the series, Seth Rogen, who also co-wrote, co-created, and co-directed The Studio, stars as the head of, you guessed it, a movie studio, with the endless stress of the job bearing down on him. In the footage for DUHPOCALYPSE, after encountering a zombie, the undead ghoul drops his pants, turns around, and… explosively defecates on Josh Hutcherson. Hutcherson is covered in red and brown, and begins to break down knowing that he’s now cursed to turn into a diarrhea-spewing zombie, with Knoxville delivering a swift mercy kill.
With that, the camera cuts to the studio conference room, where Knoxville, his lawyer, and several studio executives discuss theaters not wanting to show the trailer. According to Knoxville’s character, DUHPOCALYPSE is “a dark satire about medical disinformation.” Now, we know us movie journalists and critics are known for stretching things sometimes when it comes to thematic ties and analysis, but the critical reading of DUHPOCALYPSE might be a step too far.

Seth Rogen remains tight-lipped on the ending of his friendship with James Franco in a new interview to promote ‘The Studio.’

The Studio is one of two new comedy series blowing the doors open on Hollywood, released within the last year. In 2024, HBO’s The Studio took an inside look into the makings of commercial superhero movies, a show which was based on true stories from the making of Marvel and DC movies. The Studio is also based on various true stories. “[The studio executive] was giving us notes, and he hung his head and was like, ‘I got into this job because I love movies, and now my job is to ruin them,'” Rogen said of the studio executive who inspired the new comedy series. The official synopsis for The Studio reads:

“Seth Rogen stars as Matt Remick, the newly appointed head of embattled Continental Studios. As movies struggle to stay alive and relevant, Matt and his core team of infighting executives battle their insecurities as they wrangle narcissistic artists and craven corporate overlords in the ever-elusive pursuit of making great films. With their power suits masking their never-ending sense of panic, every party, set visit, casting decision, marketing meeting and award show presents them with an opportunity for glittering success or career-ending catastrophe. As someone who eats, sleeps and breathes movies, it’s the job Matt’s been pursuing his whole life, and it may very well destroy him.””
