‘Shōgun,’ ‘Hacks’ And ‘Baby Reindeer’ Triumph At 2024 Emmy Awards

Sep 16, 2024

In a ceremony full of upsets, there was none bigger than “Hacks” winning Comedy Series. We’re still not recovered from it. Then again, there were also a lot of expected winners. Netflix had a lot to celebrate as “Baby Reindeer” won six Emmy Awards including Limited or Anthology Series. But you know who really had a lot to celebrate? FX “Shōgun” won both the coveted Drama Series Emmys and a ton of other awards for “The Bear.”

Before the Primetime Emmy Awards began FX’s “Shōgun” had already made history winning 14 statues for the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies That’s the most wins for a Drama Series in one year and, more incredibly, a single program in one year. It actually took two hours and 19 minutes for “Shōgun” to win its 15th Emmy as Frederick E.O. Toye took Directing for a Drama Series. Hiroyuki Sanada followed taking Lead Actor in a Drama Series. And then an emotional Anna Sawai for Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
In no surprise, Jeremy Allen White repeated his Lead Actor in a Comedy Series win from January for “The Bear.” Jean Smart won her sixth Emmy overall for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for “Hacks.” That HBO Max series also saw Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky winning Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Christopher Storer won his second Directing Emmy for “The Bear.”
“The Bear’s” Ebon Moss-Bachrach and “The Morning Show’s” Billy Crudup took early wins for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and Drama Series, respectively.
In an upset, Liza Colón-Zayas won Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for “The Bear” over formidable competition. She became the first Latina to win the category. After losing last year, er, in January, Elizabeth Debicki took Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the last season of “The Crown.”
In the Limited or Anthology Series categories, Richard Gadd won Best Actor for “Baby Reindeer” and Jodie Foster took Best Actress for “True Detective: Night Country.” Jessica Gunning took the Supporting Actress Emmy for “Baby Reindeer” while Lamorne Morris shocked pretty much everyone by taking Supporting Actor for “Fargo.” Steven Zaillian won for Directing and Gadd also took the Writing Emmy.
In a genuine surprise, Will Smith took Writing for a Drama Series for “Slow Horses”
In a long-brewing upset, “The Traitors” won the Reality Competition Series category over longtime champion “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” This was Peacock’s first top-category Emmy win ever. Jon Stewart made a triumphant Emmy return as “The Daily Show” took Talk Series. And, lastly, “Last Week Tonight” won the increasingly embarassing Variety Scripted Series.
