Should the Horror Movie Get a Sequel (And What Would It Look Like)?

Nov 4, 2023

Warning: Spoilers for Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Simultaneously released in theaters and on the streaming platform Peacock, Five Nights at Freddy’s has already been categorized as a huge success at the box office. As such, its potential for a sequel is all but guaranteed. Based on the wildly popular video game franchise, the film follows a troubled security guard named Mike (Josh Hutcherson), who is forced to work the night shift at an abandoned family entertainment business similar to Chuck E Cheese. What seems like an easy job quickly turns into something more dangerous as Mike discovers ghost children are possessing Freddy’s animatronics and murdering people at the behest of a heinous man.

If the film’s early success is any indication, a sequel is more than likely going to happen, as it should. The film lived up to the hype for lovers of the original game and managed to win over audiences new to the universe of Freddy Fazbear and the rest of the beloved robots despite their propensity for murder. The film left the door open for a sequel, and it definitely deserves one. If made, the second film should expand on the story of the yellow rabbit, detail Vanessa’s (Elizabeth Lail) fate following her coma at the end of the film, and watch Mike and Abby (Piper Rubio) revisit Freddy and the rest of the animatronics given their likely shift after the yellow rabbit’s demise. In short, the sequel should give audiences more of the same and continue to hone in on what makes the Freddy Fazbear universe uniquely special to its fans.

The Door Is Open for a Sequel
Universal Pictures

Given how the film ended, Five Nights at Freddy’s definitely makes room for a sequel. Not only was it implied that the yellow rabbit would make some sort of reappearance later on, but Mike and Abby even discussed possibly visiting Freddy and the others at some point in the future. Plus, the video game universe of Freddy Fazbear is vast, which means there’s a lot of potential for multiple sequels. In a world of 13 games, there’s more than enough material for another big-screen adaptation.

Furthermore, the immense success the film has already encountered at the box office means a sequel is likely to occur. Studios love it when adaptations pay off financially, and Five Nights at Freddy’s has more than delivered on its returns. The domestic box office alone has already brought in nearly four times the film’s $20 million budget. Given the film’s clear fanbase coupled with its ability to bring in the big bucks, the door is wide open for a sequel.

More of the Yellow Rabbit
Universal Pictures

While William Afton (Matthew Lillard), who embodied the yellow rabbit, clearly met his demise at the end of the film, he’ll more than likely return, given his final declaration. Proclaiming he “always comes back” before putting the mask of the rabbit back on his head as the spring locks pierced into his body, William’s final moments were an obvious hint regarding his future involvement in the franchise.

Given his actions were essentially the catalyst for the entire premise of the film, expanding his storyline if Five Nights at Freddy’s gets a sequel would make sense. He could return as yet another possessed animatronic, or the sequel could flashback to the ’80s when he first hid the bodies of his victims inside the Freddy’s animatronics. Either way, it’s unlikely audiences have seen the last of William.

Vanessa’s Fate
Universal Pictures

Viewers last saw Vanessa in a coma at the hospital after her father, William, stabbed her when she tried to prevent him from harming Abby. While her fate remains unknown, it’s clear there’s a lot left to explore between her and Mike. While visiting her in the final scenes of the film, he tells her he’ll be there for her when she wakes up. Despite her link to the kidnapping of Mike’s younger brother, thanks to Vanessa’s father, Mike still feels a sense of gratitude after what they faced together at Freddy’s. Given the complex emotions he has toward her, watching how the two move forward in the wake of it all would be worth diving into.

Mike and Abby Return to Freddy’s
Universal Pictures

Given how much Abby cared for the ghost children upon meeting them, seeing her and Mike return to Freddy’s would be interesting. Now that the children are no longer influenced by the yellow rabbit, or so it could be assumed, watching how their relationship might evolve would be alluring, especially in the context of a horror film. There would clearly need to be some sort of tension, which their presence could spark. While Mike and Abby more than likely assume William is dead, discovering he might still be around somehow would interject the kind of conflict necessary for such a return.

Although there’s been no definitive confirmation of a sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s is performing well at the box office, which bodes well for the potential film franchise. As such, audiences can expect the inevitable return of Freddy Fazbear and the rest of the gang.
