Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Sonic the Hedgehog 3!Despite concerns about whether he would return for the latest installment, Jim Carrey seems excited about the chances of coming back for Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The third movie saw Carrey return as both Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his thought-to-be-dead grandfather Gerald Robotnik, with the two teaming up after the latter revived Shadow the Hedgehog to enact revenge on the world. After realizing the elder Robotnik intends to destroy the planet rather than rule over it, Ivo sacrifices himself to destroy the ARK and Eclipse Cannon, sending a message to Earth and Agent Stone just before the final explosion.
During an interview with Cinema Today to discuss the release of the third movie, Carrey was asked about his thoughts on returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 4. After making a joke at the start of the interview that he will be “power-resting” between jobs, he went on to say that he is “definitely open” to returning for the fourth movie, acknowledging that it will ultimately come down to the idea presented to him by the creative team, while also praising the fanbase’s support. I’m definitely open. I’m open to the idea, and generally, they come to me with the next idea, and if I go, “That sounds fun,” then I’ll do it. I don’t feel locked to anything in life, unless it’s something that interests me. I certainly love this crew, I love this gang that makes these movies, and I love the fans. There’s a lot of really great energy around it, great responses, and the fans jump in and say, “How about if you do this?” They’ve been super helpful. I think we’re all making this movie together.

Robotnik’s Fate May Not Be As Definitive As It Appears

This certainly isn’t the first time Carrey has spoken about the possibility of returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, having similarly told ScreenRant ahead of the third movie’s release it ultimately comes down to the idea presented to him by director Jeff Fowler and producer Toby Ascher. Franchise writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller also told ScreenRant that Robotnik’s fate in Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s ending was crafted in order to give him a “satisfying capper” in case Carrey didn’t want to return for the next installment, while also remaining hopeful they could bring him back. Pat Casey: We knew there was a very real possibility that this might be his last one, and it might be for real, but we wanted to make it a satisfying capper for him. So, if this is the last we saw of Ivo, he had a good, complete story with a real ending that feels satisfying and felt earned…I will say this, he’s definitely, definitely, definitely dead…unless he survives somehow. [Laughs]

While both the games and the first two movies seemingly touted the villain as an unstoppable force, both of the Robotniks’ fates in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 certainly seemed far more definitive than the previous two. Gerald was hit into the ARK’s energy field, killing him instantly, while Ivo, being in the heart of the ARK’s energy core amid its destruction, was pretty conclusive. Even if he had survived the explosion, there’s also the matter of Ivo being trapped in space without seemingly any life support equipment.

With that being said, Eggman has survived much worse fates in the games, and could very well return for Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Some have already taken to theorizing that Robotnik’s mention of cloning in the third movie could serve as a setup for his return, which could also provide Carrey with the acting challenge he desires to play a semi-newborn version of the villain. Another major theory among fans is that one of the Metal Sonics will take on the appearance of Robotnik, also giving Carrey a new way to play him.

The Writers Coaxed Him Back Once, They Can Do It Again

As definitive as his fate may have appeared in the latest movie, I don’t believe it’s the last we’ve seen of Carrey’s Robotnik, and certainly think he will be back for Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Casey and Miller found a way to create something enticing for the Golden Globe winner to want to come back, and given he remains as excited as ever to keep playing the character and find new layers to Robotnik, I do think that the team will find a fun angle to bring him back that also stays in line with the games.
