Sony’s Deleted Venom Edit Settles A Multiverse Power Debate

Sep 23, 2023

Summary

The deleted Venom edit suggests that Tom Hardy’s Venom is stronger than Topher Grace’s version, potentially hinting at future Venom projects. The ongoing debate over which live-action Venom is the strongest continues, with fans expressing differing opinions on social media. Evidence suggests that Hardy’s Venom has proven to be a competent fighter and has defeated powerful symbiotes, giving him the upper hand in a one-on-one matchup. Sony appears to agree with this assessment.

A deleted Venom edit created by Sony ends a debate over who is the more powerful version of the Marvel symbiote in the cinematic multiverse. Venom made his cinematic debut in 2007’s Spider-Man 3. The film was directed by Sam Raimi and Eddie Brock was portrayed by Topher Grace. The character was divisive among audiences, as many weren’t satisfied with the legendary comic book character portrayed as a side antagonist rather than the central threat. The character received redemption in 2018 when Venom starred in his own film, now performed by Tom Hardy. Tom Hardy’s Venom was better received, even if both movies aren’t critical darlings, raising questions about which version of Venom is stronger.

However, this edit that was reportedly shared by a Sony TikTok account and then deleted appears to end this debate in the lead up to the upcoming Venom 3 release – even if some Venom fans might not agree.

The deleted TikTok edit was shared on X by user @SpiderMan_Newz. The footage features the two Venom’s meeting before Hardy’s Venom kicks Grace out of his symbiote before it’s defeated by Hardy. Venom then tells Grace’s Brock that if he ever comes back, he will “eat your face right off your head.” Based on the edit, Sony is suggesting that Hardy’s Venom would defeat Grace’s Venom easily, a possible marketing trick for future Venom projects.

Sony’s Deleted Venom Edit Continues The Fan Debate About Which Live-Action Venom Is The Strongest

Sony’s post shows that the debate of which live-action Venom is strongest is still very much an ongoing affair, with many taking to social media to express their differing opinions about the theoretical battle. Indeed, there is certainly evidence to support either argument. Hardy’s Venom has proven to be a competent fighter in Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Brock and Venom are a strong duo, and the pair together have defeated other powerful Symbiotes, such as Riot and Carnage. On the other side of things, Topher Grace’s Venom had to be strong enough to be a match for Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, suggesting he’s no push over.

However, Raimi’s Venom did fail to defeat Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, and was eventually defeated by one of Green Goblin’s pumpkin bombs. Given Hardy’s Venom has eventually defeated all of his opponents – and that his version of Venom is significantly larger and more powerful, with the ability to shape-shift his body – it would be hard for Topher Grace’s more understated Venom to step up. As such, in a one-on-one matchup, some signs do certainly suggest that Hardy’s Venom has the upper hand, and Sony seems to agree, even if they deleted their own response to this debate.
