Succession Composer Nicholas Britell Says No One Knew the Series Was Ending Until Post Production

Apr 3, 2023

Last month, Succession creator Jesse Armstrong announced that the fourth season of the series will be its last. While the series creator is pretty firm with his decision, he reportedly took everyone by surprise since the staff and crew for the series apparently weren’t aware of this decision.

The Emmy winning HBO series marks season 4 as their final season and series composer Nicholas Britell talked to IndieWire to discuss the series officially coming to an end. Britell shares what he thought of the season ending. He said,

“I only recently knew for sure that it was officially the end, I know Jesse was really keeping an open mind, actually, and I love that he’s so passionate about the show and cares so much. Everyone knows this. Jesse wants it to be the best version of itself. So I think he basically gave himself shooting the season to be like, ‘Is this the summation?’ So I trust Jesse on that. But I recently found it was officially.”

Britell also shared that he’s not sure how the series will end. He could easily find out who will take over Logan Roy’s throne but he’d rather not. He said,

“I still as of this moment don’t know the end of the series. I’m midway through scoring it, and I purposefully keep myself in the mystery of it because I like getting surprised and having that audience reaction myself.”

It Wasn’t A Spur of The Moment Decision

Thoughts about ending the series have been boggling Jesse Armstrong’s mind since the release of the second season. However, it became clear for the creator once the production for the fourth season started. The decision to finish the series was made after they started filming. On Armstrong’s previous interview with IndieWire, he said,

“The decision to end solidified through the writing and even when we started filming: I said to the cast, ‘I’m not a hundred percent sure, but I think this is it. Because I didn’t want to bullshit them, either.”

Armstrong confirmed Succession ending with the upcoming fourth season through his interview with New Yorker. He explained,

“It’s been a bit tortured, and I felt unexpectedly nervous about talking to you, because it’s all theoretical until this point, and I have tried to keep it theoretical for a whole number of reasons. Who knows about the psychological reasons, but the creative ones were that it felt really useful to not make the final, final decision for ages. You know, there’s a promise in the title of Succession. I’ve never thought this could go on forever.”

Succession Season 4 will premire on HBO March 26.
