Sumotherhood Review: It’s A Mad Ting
Dec 12, 2023
Adam Deacon is back in the limelight with his latest comedy spoof gang culture feature and I absolutely loved it, it’s about time the UK film industry released a comedy that was actually funny! Here’s my Sumotherhood review.
Two wannabe gangsters try to rob a megastar and hold up a local bank, but when things don’t go according to plan, a misunderstanding leads them into business with one of East London’s most notorious gangs.
Adam Deacon hasn’t had it easy these last few years but his latest release Sumotherhood catapults him back into the light with this laugh-a-minute gang culture comedy.
Sumotherhood is a light hearted comedy of urban British gang culture after Deacon became famous for the more serious in tone Kidulthood and Adulthood.
Similar in vein to Don’t Be A Menace this urban crime comedy feels like Scary Movie, The Naked Gun and more wrapped up with some British twang and a whole load of laughs.
It’s like if Ali G Indahouse was made in modern times but what makes Sumotherhood so easy to watch is the chemistry between its two lead characters and the situations they find themselves in.
Never taken seriously these two wannabe gangsters end up through sheer bad luck on the wrong side of a few wrong people but manage to rise through the ranks through sheer comedic moments and chance encounters.
Sumotherhood is flooded with cameos from Ed Sheeran (who absolutely smashes his role as a crackhead) to Jeremy Corbin, who was probably the worst part about this entire movie, he really wasn’t needed in this feature. I want my attention solely focused on escapism when I watch a film.
The film goes by at a breathtaking speed where jokes are thrown ontop of jokes and there isn’t a moment to settle but when the film finally settles there’s a real heart to heart in a car scene where mental health is addressed.
Deacon himself has had his own mental health struggles and it felt as though this particular scene came from the heart despite it being included in this frantic fast paced flick there was still time to say what was on his mind in the only way he knows how.
It’s rare that we have a feel good comedy released nowadays, everyone is too scared to say things or do things without offending somebody but Sumotherhood sticks to its guns (quite literally) and delivers in every department.
Whilst the film won’t be appreciated as it should it knows its target audience and for those who can understand what the characters are saying (even for me the slang became a bit OTT at times) you’ll have a banging time.
Often at times during the film things get a little confusing with so many characters thrown in for good measure but the comedy duo of Adam Deacon and Jazzie ZonZolo fuse the cracks in this film together and you can just tell they had an absolute ball filming this.
Sumotherhood surprised me, it really did and I know it’s a film that will settle and find its audience, it’s a film that you’ll go around your friends to watch and then months later bingewatch again resting firmly in its classic urban comedy vibes ready to be picked up and enjoyed all over again.
If the Inbetweeners were ghetto this would be the exact film that they would make.
If I could summarise Sumotherhood in three words and three words only, I would say that ‘It’s a mad ting’ as that’s how I can imagine its core audience describing it.
Delete this scene and I’d have given it 5 stars
Deacon has absolutely smashed it, this film deserves your attention and I thank him and every single person who worked on this film for giving us Brits something to chuckle about at the box office.
SUMOTHERHOOD IS AVAILABLE TO BUY ON DIGITAL FROM THE 12TH OF DECEMBER AND AVAILABLE TO RENT FROM THE 26TH OF DECEMBER
