Sylvester Stallone’s Mob Crime Series Returns In September

Jun 26, 2024

Two years after it premiered, Taylor Sheridan’s “Tulsa King,” starring Oscar-nominated actor Sylvester Stallone, is finally returning to Paramount+. Today, the streamer released a new teaser trailer and announced a Sunday, September 15 premiere date in the U.S. and Canada and across Paramount+ international markets beginning Monday, September 16.

“Tulsa King” centers on Mafia capo Dwight “The General” Manfredi (Stallone), a mob captain who kept his mouth shut and stayed in prison for 20 years. However, after his release from prison, because of some bitter rivalries with the remaining families and his issues with the new sons in charge, he is exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he builds a new criminal empire with a group of unlikely characters.
“Tulsa King” also went through many ups and downs creatively as a show. After season one, the series parted ways with veteran TV writer and producer Terence Winter, known for his work on “The Sopranos” and Martin Scorsese’s “Boardwalk Empire.” The reporting at the time was that Sheridan—who promised autonomy—just couldn’t cede control and eventually fired Winter.
But as a season two renewal floundered, and Sheridan was pulled in multiple directions—trying to salvage “Yellowstone” season 5 without Kevin Costner, rethinking “Mayor Of Kingstown” for a still-healing Jeremy Renner and launching new shows like “Land Man”—Sheridan and Paramount eventually rehired Winter and we’re right back to where we started (the interview we conducted with him during season one is retrospectively fascinating).
Apart from Stallone, “Tulsa King” is the first TV series he’s ever starred in; the ensemble cast includes Martin Starr, Jay Will, Max Casella, Vincent Piazza, Tatiana Zappardino, Annabella Sciorra, Neal McDonough, Frank Grillo, Domenick Lombardozzi, Andrea Savage, Garrett Hedlund, and Dana Delany.
Here’s the season two synopsis:
In season two, Dwight (Stallone) and his crew continue to build up and defend their growing empire in Tulsa, but just as they get their bearings, they realize that they’re not the only ones who want to stake their claim. With looming threats from the Kansas City mob and a very powerful local businessman, Dwight struggles to keep his family and crew safe while keeping track of all his affairs. Plus, he still has unfinished business back in New York.
Executive produced by Oscar nominee Taylor Sheridan, Oscar nominee and writer Terence Winter, and multi-award-nominated director Craig Zisk, “Tulsa King” is currently filming in Oklahoma and Atlanta and that means Sheridan will have two shows airing this fall, ‘Tulsa’ in September and “Yellowstone” season 5 in November (“Land Man” and “Lioness” season two likely aren’t arriving until 2025).
The series is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios exclusively for Paramount+, and additional executive producers on the project include David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Sylvester Stallone, Braden Aftergood, and Keith Cox, and is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.
