It was a very good day for A24 as the mini-major dominated the film nominations announced for the 2022 Gotham Awards. In fact, the studio had two Best Feature nominees, “Aftersun” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” The other nominations in the top category are “TAR,” which landed five nominations overall, Sundance premiere “Dos Estaciones” and “The Cathedral” which debuted at the Venice Film Festival in 2021. The latter two films are under the radar for many but received strong reviews.

Intended to be the East Coast celebration of independent content, a film needs American producers or directors to qualify for the Gothams. That’s why a British film, “Aftersun,” made the cut (produced by Oscar winners Adele Romanski and Barry Jenkins, among others) and “The Banshees of Inisherin” (non-American producers) was relegated to an International Feature nomination. Other International nominees included “Decision to Leave,” “Athena,” “Corsage,” “Happening” and “Saint Omer.”
Films that qualified for the top honor and were snubbed by the committee included “Women Talking,” “The Whale,” “The Inspection,” “Armageddon Time,” “Bones and All” and “After Yang.” Moreover, for those hoping to qualify Gotham selections with Oscar nominees, not one Best Feature nominee earned an Academy Awards nod for Best Picture last year. Over the previous two years, just one nominee each made the cut (“Nomandland,” “Marriage Story”).
On the television side, “Abbott Elementary,” “As We See It,” “Mo,” “Rap Sh!t” and “Somebody Somewhere” were nominated for Breakthrough Series – Short Format. The Long Format nominees included “Pachiko,” “Severance,” “Station Eleven,” “This is Going to Hurt” and “Yellowjackets.”
Lead Performance nominees in a film include Cate Blanchett, Danielle Deadwyler, Dale Dickey in A Love Song, Colin Farrell (“After Yang”), Brendan Fraser, Paul Mescal, Thandiwe Newton, Aubrey Plaza, Taylor Russell, and Michelle Yeoh. Supporting Performance nominees in a feature included Jessie Buckley, Raúl Castillo, Hong Chau, Brian Tyree Henry, Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant, Ke Huy Quan, Mark Rylance, Gabrielle Union, and Ben Whishaw.
Breakthrough Performance ina Television Series nominees were Bilal Baig, Ayo Edebiri, Janelle James, Minha Kim, Matilda Lawler, Britt Lower, Melanie Lynskey, Zahn McClarnon , Sue Ann Pien, and Ben Whishaw.
Selected by five-person committees of mostly critics (including a few who write for this publication), separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors, and others directly involved in making films will vote for the actual winners.
The winners of the 32nd Annual Gotham Awards will be announced Monday, November 28 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
