‘The Bear,’ ‘The Idol,’ ‘Secret Invasion’ & More

Following the series finales of fan favorites such as “Barry,” “Succession,” and “Ted Lasso,” along with the season finale of “Yellowjackets,” about half of the requisite, must-watch television ended in one week. June’s lineup looks to fill in the gaps left by those series, from polarizing new dramas taking that Sunday night HBO slot to prestige series filling up the streaming service lineup.

2022 breakout “The Bear” returns for its second season after the first nabbed star Jeremy Allen White a SAG award for Actor in a Comedy, while cult favorites such as “Painting with John” are given more love in their latest outing. It’s a major month for streaming, with new shows airing on Peacock, Paramount, Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+, with genre favorites such as the new Marvel series leading the bunch.
“Painting with John”
The documentary series “Painting with John” returns for its third season, featuring artist John Lurie at his work table as he hones his talents. The intricate watercolor techniques displayed are intercut with his reflections on life and the lessons he’s learned. Produced by Adam McKay, Lurie and his eclectic career make for often hilarious anecdotes as he shares stories about some of the wilder instances he’s experienced over the years. Season three see’s him joined by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist and musician Flea.
Release Date: Season 3 premiered June 2 on HBO and to stream on Max.
“The Idol”
The latest project from “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson, The Weekend starring “The Idol” has already amassed considerable buzz. Lily-Rose Depp stars in HBO series that depicts the insidious lives of those seeking fame and fortune in. Depp stars as a pop star who has just recently left rehab and finds herself entrenched in a relationship with a self-appointed self-help guru and cult leader. Troye Sivan, Rachel Sennott, Blackpinks’s Jennie Kim, Hari Neff, and more also star.
Release Date: Season 1 premieres June 4 on HBO.
“Based On A True Story”
Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, and Tom Bateman star in the latest from Peacock, “Based on a True Story.” Created by Craig Rosenberg and Jason Bateman, the comedy thriller follows the story of a realtor, a tennis player, and a plumber as they attempt to capitalize on the popularity of true crime by using a podcast to cover and exploit a series of murders that have taken place in their neighborhood.
Release Date: Season 1 premieres June 8 on Peacock.
“Never Have I Ever”
Season four of Netflix’s coming-of-age story “Never Have I Ever” will also be its last. Co-created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher and starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as first-generation Indian American Devi, the show follows her ambitious high school journey as she struggles with identity, young love and sex, and the hurdles of overcoming grief. Season four picks up after Devi makes the decision to stay at Sherman Oaks High for her senior year. Ramona Young, Lee Rodriguez, Jaren Lewiston, and Poorna Jagannathan also star.
Release Date: Season 4 premieres June 8 on Netflix.
