The Heart of Texas Featured, Reviews Film Threat

Aug 18, 2024

HOLLYSHORTS FILM FESTIVAL 2024 REVIEW! In Gregory J.M. Kasnuich and Lauren Noll’s short film, The Heart of Texas, the American Dream is something we all hope to attain…it’s just harder for some than others.
Lauren Noll plays server by day/singer by night, Janie. Her shot at the American Dream is about to become a reality as she was chosen by a famous country star to compete for a chance to be the opening act for his upcoming U.S. tour.
Rushing her way out of her final shift at the diner, Janie speeds to the radio station for the contest and drops her phone on the car floor. With eyes off the road, Janie hits her co-worker Jesús (Carlos Moreno Cravioto) with her car. In the car, Jesús insists she stops because he is undocumented and will be deported if caught. Of course, the police roll up beside Janie’s car.

“…she was chosen by a famous country star to compete for a chance to be the opening act…”
The Heart of Texas asks us to wrestle with a question. Life is a struggle and in our pursuit of the American Dream and a good life, what will we…what must we do to get it? One of the things I love about short films is that their format can simply ask a tough question and leave it to the audience to answer it. No preaching—questions only.
As a film, director Kasnuich shows off different styles of cinematic storytelling, from a TikTok-like opening to Janie rushing through a crowded diner kitchen to the claustrophobic stress of the front seat of a car. His choice of shots and composition enhance the story that plays out in front of the camera.
The Heart of Texas captures the tension and moral dilemmas faced by its characters, leaving viewers to wrestle with the consequences of their choices. With its dynamic storytelling and impactful visuals, this film lingers in the mind long after the credits roll.
The Heart of Texas screened at the 2024 Hollyshorts Film Festival.
