The Horror of Dolores Roach Boss Unveils Promising Prospects for Season 2
Jul 20, 2023
The Horror of Dolores Roach appears to have carved a peculiar niche for itself in the horror-comedy category. The Prime Video series has been garnering attention with its chilling yet darkly humorous narrative.
The Horror of Dolores Roach takes its inspiration from an off-Broadway play and a podcast, both bearing the same name. These two distinct sources actively form the foundation of the series. It’s a bold testament to the amalgamation of genres and a testament to the talent of its creator, Aaron Mack.
The series unravels around the intriguing character of Dolores Roach, brought to life by Justina Machado. Released from an unfair 16-year imprisonment, Dolores returns to her gentrified Washington Heights neighborhood. The narrative takes a bleak twist as Dolores resorts to extreme measures to maintain her new equilibrium amid unfamiliar surroundings.
The series distinguishes itself through a unique mix of horror and dark comedy that charts Dolores’ journey. This compelling blend underlines television’s ongoing potential as a rich canvas for experimenting with various genres.
During an exclusive conversation with Screen Rant, the show’s creative force, Aaron Mack, shares a hopeful glimpse into the future trajectory of the series. In his candid response, he teases a lot more narrative in the pipeline. Mack hints that there is more to explore in the journey of the “unkillable” Dolores Roach, urging audiences to watch the first season to ensure the continuation of the series.
“There’s much more story to tell. We like to say Dolores Roach is unkillable. She will pop up anywhere, she’ll make it work, and she’ll figure it out. There’s a lot more of her story to tell. And because we open and close the season in the present day, the meat, if you’ll pardon the pun, of the series is in 2019, pre-COVID. We’ve set up this idea that four years into the future, this character who just wanted to be left alone, she wanted to be underground, she wanted to be under the radar, now is a world-famous serial killer. And the idea of what that means for her now that her story is being taken from her—I think there’s a lot more story to tell. So I implore people to watch the first season so that we’re able to keep telling the story.”

Blending Horror and Comedy for a Unique Narrative
Prime Video
This show is a part of Prime Video’s innovative trend of presenting inclusive stories told through the lens of horror and comedy. Two other notable examples are “Swarm” and “I’m a Virgo,” which have made a significant impact with their succinct, engaging narratives, seldom extending beyond 30 minutes per episode. This approach steers clear of the ongoing streaming trend of long runtimes and offers viewers a refreshing break with these brisk, intriguing narratives.
The Horror of Dolores Roach, boasting a remarkable ensemble cast including Kita Updike, K. Todd Freeman, Ilan Eskenazi, Jeffery Self, Judy Reyes, Marc Maron, Jean Yoon, and Cyndi Lauper, carries this baton forward. This unique narrative trend has proven beneficial for these shows, with “Swarm” reportedly being a massive hit for Prime Video.
Mack’s comments underline the importance of audience engagement for these smaller yet immensely creative narratives. The possibility of exploring the aftermath of the cliffhanger ending of The Horror of Dolores Roach relies heavily on audience support.
It’s an earnest call to action for viewers to not only tune in for blockbuster franchises but to provide equal support for these offbeat narratives.
