The New Frontier DCU Movie is Coming

Nov 7, 2024

DC Comics superheroes will be delivering justice in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted cinematic universe, but they’ll be doing it on their own, at least for now. The new DCU has been the target of countless rumors and false reports as Gunn has revealed several new upcoming projects in the franchise. DC Studios recently announced some new projects, including a Bane/Deathstroke crossover film, a Dick Grayson/Jason Todd animated movie, and a live-action Teen Titans film (finally!). Thanks in part to the latter team-up project, and the already-announced heroes appearing in the new DCU, fans assumed that DC Studios already had plans to make a Justice League movie, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Taking on Threads, James Gunn played his favorite pastime of calling out the blatantly false rumors about the new DC Universe. In the past, the director and co-president of DC Studios has addressed middle-aged Batman casting rumors, and the reason behind Aaron Pierre’s inspired casting as John Stewart in Lanterns. This time, he’s turning his attention to the first big team-up in the comic book industry, the Justice League.

Responding to a report shared by a fan about Justice League: The New Frontier being in development, Gunn shared his disappointing, but sympathetic response. The report claimed that Gunn himself would be writing and directing the movie, but the director shut down the report, saying, “Nope sorry. No truth to this whatsoever.” However, James Gunn shared his love for the comic book New Frontier, and revealed that it has massively inspired some of the new DC Studios projects. Gunn continued:

“That said I love New Frontier and its magical alternate history is a big influence on DC Studios.”

DC Studios Shouldn’t Rush Their Justice League Movie

Fans are already getting excited about potentially seeing David Corenswet’s Superman as part of the Justice League with Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart. However, the new DC Studios shouldn’t repeat the mistakes of the franchise’s past attempt at, well… franchising. Under the eyes of Zack Snyder, the old DCEU had a rocky run in its attempt to beat the MCU at its own game. With a minimal set-up of its core characters, the DCEU rushed headfirst into its Justice League movie, which had its own host of controversies, including the involvement of The Avengers director Joss Whedon.

The new DCU could certainly benefit from a Justice League team-up movie, but it needs to establish all the major characters first. Superman will be the first to grace the big screen next year, with Batman set to follow a few years down the road. But, the other core members, like Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, and The Flash, need time to flesh out their own motivations for joining the team. Most importantly, James Gunn needs to establish a villain so powerful that it can only take the entire team to bring down (but please not another iteration of Doomsday or Steppenwolf).

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”Release Date July 11, 2025 Cast David Corenswet , Rachel Brosnahan , María Gabriela De Faría , Edi Gathegi , Nicholas Hoult , Frank Grillo , Nathan Fillion , Milly Alcock , Sara Sampaio , Pruitt Taylor Vince , Skyler Gisondo , Anthony Carrigan , Wendell Pierce , Beck Bennett , Sean Gunn Expand
