‘The Penguin,’ And ‘Shōgun’ Lead The 2025 DGA TV Nominations
Jan 7, 2025
The Directors Guild of America unveiled the television, documentary, and commercial nominations for the 2025 DGA Awards and if you were a cynic, you might think they watch very little television. In three different categories, the guild awards the directors of three programs doing very little to spread the wealth in another strong year of TV. Those series may sound familiar: “The Bear,” “Shōgun,” and “The Penguin.”

In the Dramatic Serie category, filmmakers Hiromi Kamata, Frederick E.O. Toye, and Jonathan Van Tulleken were recognized for “Shōgun.” “True Detective: Night Country’s” Issa Lopez and “The Diplomat’s” Alex Graves rounded out the category.
For Comedy Series, Ayo Edebiri earned her first DGA nomination alongside Duccio Fabbri and 2024 winner Christopher Storer for “The Bear.” “Hacks” co-creator Lucia Aniello and “Curb Your Enthusiasm’s” Jeff Schaeffer also were recognized.
In the Movies for Television and Limited Series field, Kevin Bray, Jennifer Getzinger, and Helen Shaver landed noms for “The Penguin.” They stand alongside two-time film DGA winner Alfonso Cuaron for “Disclaimer” and Steve Zaillian who won this category in 2017 for “The Night Of.”
The Documentary nominees include Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev for “Porcelain War,” Emily Kassie and Julian Brave NoiseCat for “Sugarcane,” Johan Grimonprez for “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat,” Ibrahim Nash’at for “Hollywoodgate,” and Angela Patton and Natalie Rae for “Daughters.” All five films made the Oscars shortlist for Documentary Feature, but the snubs for “No Other Land,” “The Bibi Files,” and “Union” were notable.
The film nominees will be revealed tomorrow.
The 2025 DGA Awards will be handed out on Saturday, February 8 at the Beverly Hilton.
