The Sidemen Story Review: Wholesome Entertainment

Feb 15, 2024

The Sidemen Story takes the dream of millions around the world and says that not only is it possible but that no matter how famous you get or how much money you make the one thing that’s priceless, is friendship. Here’s our The Sidemen Story review.

The pioneering British collective of internet personalities and content creators take a look back at their journey over their first decade together.
In a world where people look at success with jealousy instead of celebration, there’s one group that seems to have defied the odds and has united millions around the world in a celebration of ordinary lads who started with humble beginnings and rose to heights unknown in the YouTube space.
As a humble theme park YouTuber myself with my channel Lift Hills and Thrills (I know Josh is a theme park fan, get subscribing fella!) you notice that in every community there is so much jealousy and pettiness when channels around you blow up into stardom and The Sidemen Story sort of go against the grain of that mentality and prove to you why they’re so likeable and why they got to where they are and that should be celebrated and never hated.
Anyone thinks you can just pick up a game, play it and become the next PewdiePie and it just isn’t like that. There’s a ridiculous amount of work involved behind the scenes from filming to editing but no matter how good those skills are there’s one more important thing.
Personality.
Personality will always get you places and it’s very clear that Ethan, Harry, Joshua, JJ, Simon, Tobi and Vik all have it in bundles and when combined form some sort of content creator Avengers where the videos just make themselves at this point.

Put these guys in a plain room, not a studio, just sitting down, hanging out and it’ll be exceedingly more entertaining than any trash Big Brother episode on the TV that’s for sure!
Over 10 years of content creation has amassed over 100 million views from their fans.
The documentary dives into each individual and showcases their beginnings and how they joined the group.
The Sidemen Story consists of personal interviews and video footage which already steps this documentary up and gives it that personal homemade feel.
They’re just a group of mates having a laugh and whilst it has gone from a group of mates chatting online to a group of mates talking in multi-million-pound houses and driving fancy cars yet they all seem as grounded as one can be leading the lives that they do and that’s great to see.
Seeing JJ’s first song released to chart hits over the years is a growth story for the ages, seeing what the lads did with their vodka brand and spin-offs of various Sidemen content and how each individual has earned wealth collectively and individually is something to be applauded.

I don’t think I can travel anywhere nowadays without walking past a SIDES restaurant (a fast food joint the lads opened) or even before we went to Holland a few weeks ago I walked past a SIDES clothing store in a shopping centre. I’m an honest bloke, I’m just glad this documentary was better than the first SIDES meal I ever had at Wembley, £20 for a salty overdose was not a good time for me.
Regardless of them abusing my tastebuds the lads have well and truly taken over and that must be a strange and mad experience for each and every single one of them seeing a restaurant or clothing store with their brand on whenever they visit a shopping mall.
What the documentary does exceptionally well is lift the lid on what many may have no idea about.
Those unanswerable questions that fans have been crying out for years such as their split back in 2017 and other bits of information that would be worth watching the documentary for alone if you’re a big fan.
I love the openness of the documentary as it feels as though no one held back, I’m sure there must be some things that are best left unsaid but it’s a very heart-on-sleeve account and you have to respect them all for that, especially during a time when each member thought that the group was over for good.

Paying attention to the hate comments in a sea of millions of positive comments is also explored along with mental health which is dived into in some depth.
Online hate and trolling are part and parcel of YouTube or anyone that has the public eye on them and seeing how they dealt with that and still deal with that to this day just can’t be easy for anyone.
No matter how strong you may think you are things pile up and not only dealing with it but talking about it in such an honest and open way had my respect for the lads skyrocket tenfold.
None of that stuff is easy to talk about, it always feels like a taboo subject in today’s society to be that open and honest especially in the public eye where anything you say can be weaponised against you but even those unfamiliar with The Sidemen will respect what is being said in this documentary.
Credit – NetflixThere’s a real message throughout the documentary and it’s one that people should pay attention and listen to.
Driving that passion, motivation and determination to succeed mentality is one side of the documentary but showcasing that these lads are human at the end of the day, dealing with real shit and experiencing real problems, that’s the stuff we need to see, that’s the grounding that we need to witness.
It’s honest, it’s enthralling and it’s wholesome entertainment.
Get it watched, IMMEDIATELY!

Our Rating

Summary
Directed with precision this documentary weaves archive footage and heart on sleeve facetime with the lads to deliver a comprehensive, endearing and quite frankly motivating piece of entertainment. These lads prove that against the odds what is possible and show that no matter how much fame, money and public eye attention you have friendship trumps all.
