The World’s Weirdest Museum? Viktor Wynd’s in London

Jan 2, 2023

There are not many things in this world that surprise me. Working in horror specifically I had an impression that I’d seen it all. Well, that was until I took a trip to Viktor Wynd’s Museum of Curiosities which is perhaps the world’s weirdest museum.

Combining a curiosities museum with a cocktail bar this was a must-visit place on my list! Whilst heading on down to London for a screening of Hobbs and Shaw I set off early to go and see what the museum is all about.

Situated in Hackey a rather unusual place just outside of London city centre lies the museum. The area itself looks rather run-down but the museum stands out a mile away with its beautiful exterior and the interior is even more incredible.

Like stepping into the mind of Charles Darwin this Victorian-era decor just pops. Taxidermy animals line the walls and the small yet intimate bar makes for a welcoming entrance.
After picking up a beer at the bar we headed on down the spiral staircase into the museum after paying a reasonable £6 admission fee. I don’t even know where I can start with this review. The items on display are absolute insanity, you have absolutely no idea where you look and as so many things are unlabelled you’re not entirely sure most of the time just what it is you’re looking at!
There are not many places in London you can have a beer with a stuffed mountain lion and a dead guy in one day.

The cabinets are lined with shrunken heads, weird sex artefacts, mummified skulls and even celebrity poo?! Yes, you heard me. In some jars in the museum is Amy Winehouse and Kylie Minogue’s poo. Now I really have seen it all!

The museum is small but the items are so vast you could spend hours just browsing the variety on offer. Tribal statues, Pablo Escobar’s gold hippo skull, Charles Bronson artwork and more. There really isn’t a space of wall left without some weird and wonderful piece dangling from it.

I really can’t list everything in this museum without this review turning into a novel! The museum provides a guidebook for an extra £1. It’s well worth the investment.

Many of the items are not labelled as a regular museum collection would be so the guidebook helps you along the way. It certainly comes in handy. Because of the sheer number of items on display having signs up for every item would take up considerable space!

Viktor Wynd’s Museum of Curiosities is a place that I quite frankly didn’t want to leave. The atmosphere is absolutely perfect and the weirdness of the items perfectly matched my weird and intrigued mind.

At the entrance, you can actually buy souvenirs. I absolutely loved the fact that you could buy your own curiosities whilst you were there, I really love the item of taking something unusual home with as a memento of the trip and they had a lovely weird selection to choose from.
Overall

Words just do not do this place justice. The ONLY curiosity museum in the country and it will forever be a tourist attraction for years to come. A masterclass collection that is as eye-opening as it is illuminating. Head on in with an open mind and prepare yourselves to see some crazy shit!

I would recommend ordering a taxi from inside the museum thou however as it was damn near impossible to get one for miles around. We had a good 30-minute walk around and couldn’t find one single taxi to flag down so be warned!
