Apr 7, 2024

Summary

Thor: Ragnarok
shifted to a comedic tone, becoming the best-reviewed
Thor
movie & a fan favorite with over $855 million worldwide.
Chris Hemsworth’s character growth in the threequel stands out, making peace with Loki & confronting his ego as a hero.
Despite some criticism for its comedy and rushed story, it’s clear why
Ragnarok
remains an MCU fan-favorite.

With seven years gone since the movie first hit theaters, the latest episode of Screen Rant’s own Pitch Meeting series is revisiting its Thor: Ragnarok analysis. The third installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe subfranchise was a major overall shift for the titular hero, with director Taika Waititi and Chris Hemsworth taking an improv-heavy, comedic approach in contrast with the serious tone of the first two movies. The result was a success, garnering the best reviews for a Thor movie and becoming its highest-grossing with over $855 million worldwide.

While the character’s future remains unknown, Screen Rant has decided to look back on its original Thor: Ragnarok Pitch Meeting episode. The video, as seen at the top of this article, features the original analysis, in which host Ryan George humorously points out some of the flaws of the 2017 movie, including its rushed plot and seemingly thin script. George also goes back and looks back on his script for the original episode, acknowledging some of his original jokes were “mean spirited” and editing it to match his newer episodes’ tone and speed.

Thor: Ragnarok Was Essential For The MCU Hero (Even With Its Flaws)

With a 93% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Thor: Ragnarok not only remains the best-reviewed installment in the subfranchise, but also one of MCU fans’ favorites. The shift towards a comedic tone was welcomed after The Dark World’s overly serious story, and Waititi’s blockbuster debut proved to be a return to the more colorful palette displayed in the first Thor movie. Check out how Thor: Ragnarok compares to its other movies on Rotten Tomatoes below:

Title RT Critics Score RT Audience Score Thor 77% 76% Thor: The Dark World 67% 75% Thor: Ragnarok 93% 87% Thor: Love and Thunder 67% 76%

In addition to its tone, Thor: Ragnarok arguably showed the best sense of growth for Chris Hemsworth’s MCU hero across his four standalone movies. Between making some peace with his adopted brother, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, to having to come to terms with his ego and position as an Asgardian royal, Thor was forced to reckon with a lot of changes in his life and worldview and grow beyond some of his past grudges to become a true hero.

Related Thor 5: Story, Setting, Cast, & Everything We Know Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love & Thunder seems to set up an antagonist for Thor 5, but details about the potential MCU sequel remain unconfirmed.

Though some could argue that this shift in character personality was for the worse heading into Thor: Love and Thunder, considering its more mixed reviews, Thor: Ragnarok still opened the door for a variety of important stories heading into the MCU’s future. The seeds of Asgardians building a new home on Earth following the destruction of their world, Thor having to determine who and what was important to him and realize how he could be a symbol for his people beyond his fighting can all be credited back to the 2017 movie.
