Twisted Metal’s Anthony Mackie Believes the Series Amplifies the Game’s Legacy
Aug 5, 2023
For years, Hollywood has masterfully reimagined video game sagas into captivating live-action renditions. Now, Peacock introduces Twisted Metal, an adaptation of the classic vehicular combat games, guaranteeing both thrills and a fresh perspective on its universe.
Anthony Mackie, the show’s protagonist and a Hollywood heavyweight, passionately shared insights on how the series might reshape fans’ understanding of the game. Set against the gritty backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world, Twisted Metal melds action and comedy to bring audiences a fresh yet familiar experience. Mackie, famed for his diverse roles, portrays John Doe, a milkman struggling with amnesia. The series boasts an ensemble cast, featuring Stephanie Beatriz of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Thomas Haden Church from Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the comedic genius of Will Arnett from Arrested Development.
In a candid conversation with Screen Rant, Mackie dished about the show’s plot trajectory, character depth, and narrative. Much of his enthusiasm was directed towards the showrunner, MJ, whose vision for Twisted Metal was lauded by Mackie. The actor drew parallels between this series and the likes of Cobra Kai, attributing its anticipated success to top-tier writing talent from acclaimed movies such as Deadpool and Zombieland. Mackie explained,
“Yeah, MJ had a very clear idea of what he wanted the scope of this story to be, and what he wanted Twisted Metal to become. He’s very good, as far as arc and character, and keeping that going to make it a three-dimensional person.
You see that with this show, just like with Cobra Kai. It didn’t hurt that we had two of the best writers in the business from Deadpool and Zombieland writing on this s–t. But he really was able to take these characters and this world, and make it three-dimensional to the point that it justifies if you go back and play the video game now after seeing the show. The video game makes more sense, because you have a relationship with the chracters as opposed to just picking a car and shooting at each other. It’s like, “Oh, he doesn’t like him because of this. He doesn’t like him because of that.” It was really well done, really well crafted, and he did a great job with relating the video game to the show.”
Mackie emphasized that the showrunners have successfully made the world of Twisted Metal more immersive. By fleshing out character arcs, players of the game can now find deeper meanings and connections among characters. Instead of solely partaking in vehicular battles in the game, players might now reflect upon character rivalries and dynamics, understanding the deeper reasons behind on-screen animosities. The show promises to deliver a rich tapestry of character relationships, offering fans a more holistic understanding of the Twisted Metal universe.

Every iteration of the Twisted Metal game has attempted to weave an overarching narrative. Yet, as Mackie pointed out, many a time, character backstories and relationships remained in the periphery, often taking a backseat to gameplay. The TV series seems primed to bridge this gap. With character dynamics at the forefront, the series might prove to be a treasure trove for fans wanting more depth from their favorite vehicular warriors.
Of course, adaptations come with their fair share of changes. Characters from the games, including Mackie’s John Doe, have undergone transformations. While purists might bemoan the shifts in character lore, Mackie is of the belief that these changes are for the better. The broader exposition on the show promises to make in-game relationships more poignant and logical, enhancing the overall player experience.
Twisted Metal is not just another adaptation; it’s an invitation to rediscover the beloved game under a new light. As Mackie fervently believes, the series will not only entertain but will also offer fans a renewed perspective on the video game’s universe.
The countdown is on for Twisted Metal enthusiasts, with the show set to premiere on Peacock in the next few weeks. You can watch Twisted Metal’s trailer in the meantime.
