Vincent D’Onofrio Teases Season 2 Of The Series & A “Really Deep, Really Emotional” Story
Mar 27, 2023
When it was originally announced, the “Daredevil: Born Again” TV adaptation was said to take place over 18 episodes. This is a huge commitment from Marvel Studios, who has typically kept shows to nine episodes, at most. So, when one of the actors from the series is already teasing Season 2, it sounds crazy. But maybe, talking about a “Season 2” isn’t exactly what you’re thinking.

Speaking to Newsweek, ‘Daredevil’ actor Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays the villainous Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, teased the new Marvel Studios TV series and explained that there are going to be two seasons of ‘Born Again.’ But here’s the thing, it doesn’t sound as if he’s talking about two distinct stories. It really does seem as if he’s talking about one story split between two seasons.
“We’ve only just started shooting. I think we’re a couple weeks in, and the show is going to be very, very different than the Netflix show, and it’s so exciting because what we’re doing is quite something,” D’Onofrio said. “I think it’s something that people are not going to expect. But, always with these Marvel old comic stories that are being revisited and reinvented by us actors, and the writers, the main thing is to answer the fans.”

He continued, “To give them what they want but try to be original in some way at the same time, and so that’s what we’re doing on the show. It’s definitely an original way to look at this, and it’s really deep, really emotional. And, by the second season, there are gigantic, gigantic payoffs—in the first season, too, but I can’t say much about that—but the fans are gonna really get what they want. It’s really quite cool to be doing it.”
Now, when you think about it, the 18 episodes for ‘Born Again,’ which surprised fans at the time, might just consist of two parts being split into nine-episode bundles. Perhaps, we’ll get ‘Born Again Part 1’ and then six months later, ‘Born Again Part 2.’ That makes a lot of sense, especially when you consider the story that is being adapted.
First, it’s important to know that Marvel Studios doesn’t necessarily adapt stories in a complete, faithful way when it brings a comic book storyline to the screen. The studio takes bits and pieces and makes what is believed to be the best plot for the project. However, the ‘Born Again’ storyline from the comic books is so beloved, you have to assume (much like ‘Civil War’) that Marvel is going to keep most of the bones.
‘Born Again’ tells the story of Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), aka Daredevil, as he deals with the fallout of his biggest enemy, Kingpin, learning his secret identity. Kingpin, who has battled Daredevil for a long time, decides the best way to utilize this info isn’t to just kill his nemesis but to systematically tear down his life, driving Murdock to the brink of insanity. If you’ve read the comic book source material, you can definitely piece together exactly where there is a great stopping point that would lend itself to being the end of ‘Part 1.’ And honestly, it would have much more impact, as a TV show, to end Season 1 of ‘Born Again’ and make people wait a bit longer to see the resolution.
“Daredevil: Born Again” has only just begun filming and is likely to be released sometime in 2024. Well, ‘Part 1,’ at least.
