Why You Won’t See The Avengers in the Series

Jun 29, 2023

Nick Fury’s strong belief in superheroes resulted in the formation of an alliance of extraordinary heroes named the Avengers to save the earth from potential threats. The world council ordered Fury to not waste his time on the Avengers Initiative and focus on his objective as a Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. However, being an enigmatic and bold personality, he disobeyed the council’s orders and worked on his plans. It’s worth noting that Fury’s decision to assemble “a group of remarkable people” turned out to be a universe-saving idea.

Secret Invasion: How The Blip SHOOK Nick Fury How ready is he? How much did the blip change him? Well, actor Samual L. Jackson, is here to answer

The Avengers started with six members, but throughout their journey of protecting the earth, many new heroes joined them. After a relaxing vacation in space, Nick Fury is back to save humanity from the shape-shifting Skrull invaders. Secret Invasion, a six-episode series, marks the epic return of Nick Fury after the events of Avengers: Endgame.

So, does that mean the Avengers will come to help save the world from the threat posed by Skrulls? Well, the answer is no; the series will witness Nick Fury taking the matter into his own hands and fighting alone. Let’s quickly dive into the reasons why the Avengers won’t be present in the series when humankind needs them the most.

The Avengers and Nick Fury Connection
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Nick Fury’s iconic line, “I’m here to talk to you about the Avengers initiative,” in the Iron Man 2 post-credit scene to date sends shivers down everyone’s spine. The scrapped initiative’s roots are later seen in the 2019 movie, Captain Marvel, when Nick Fury and Carol Danvers teamed up to protect the Skrulls from Kree and retrieve the Tesseract in the 1990s. However, by the end of the film, he comes to the realization that S.H.I.E.L.D. isn’t enough to safeguard the world, and that’s when the Avengers idea pops up in his mind. He embarks on a mission to bring together heroes with superhero abilities, who can step in when the world needs them and battle threats.

Initially, the idea was named Protectors Initiative, but Fury was inspired by the Danvers Air Force call sign, so he changed it to Avengers Initiative. Heroes like Tony Stark (Iron Man), Steve Rogers (Captain America), Thor, Bruce Banner (Hulk), Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), and Clint Barton (Hawkeye) joined the roster. In 2012, the Avengers first assembled in the battle against the Chitauri in New York.

Nick Fury, a mastermind with trust issues, never cast doubt on the ability of his beloved Avengers to protect the world. The Avengers were more than a planet-saving band; they shared a special bond and mutual respect. When the group faced failure in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Fury showed trust in them and gave a pep talk to lift their spirits whenever they needed it.

It’s true that the events of Endgame decided the fate of each original Avenger; some got a happy ending while the rest suffered misery. Fury’s first recruit, Iron Man stops Thanos from using the Infinity Stones and snaps, which results in his death. Speaking of the first Avenger, Steve Rogers traveled back in time to return the Stones, but fulfilled his heart’s wish of living with his first love, Peggy Carter. Natasha Romanoff, the bravest Avenger who always tried to keep the group together, gave up her life by jumping off the cliff for the Soul Stone in order to bring everyone back. Thor hands off his royal title to Valkyrie and goes with the Guardians of the Galaxy into space. Hawkeye retires, and Hulk’s future is left in uncertainty until his appearance in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

So, now, you might be wondering if the OG Avengers weren’t around anymore, then why don’t the new ones step in? Well, Marvel has just started setting up the new ones and digging into the stories of supporting characters, so it doesn’t look like they might assemble until Avengers: Kang Dynasty. However, Marvel has always been secretive about its plans, so you never know what’s up their sleeve. In the comics, the Avengers do show up in the Secret Invasion storyline, but it seems like the invasion is dealt with differently by focusing on Nick Fury’s lone fight.

In a recent featurette, Samuel L. Jackson disclosed that they’re trying to fix problems “without being too superhuman” (via The Direct). Also, the clip hints at his character having no powers and contacts like before. However, the series will come up with a fair explanation of why the Avengers aren’t involved, as teased by Jackson. Since the blip, the world has changed, and so has Nick Fury, as stated by Maria Hill in the trailer, which creates a lot of suspicion around his character, too. Some theories on the internet even have started considering him a Skrull in disguise. Whatever the case, Secret Invasion will dive deeper into the story arc of the mysterious Nick Fury like never before.

The last time viewers got to see Nick Fury was in Avengers: Endgame, where he reunited with his fellow Avengers to pay homage to Tony Stark. Further, in Spider-Man: Far From Home, he sent Skrulls disguised as him and Maria Hill. He had been off the planet for a long time, enjoying his short vacation until his peace is disrupted by the Skrull invasion on Earth, which leads to his return. The clock is ticking, and the war is drawing near for Nick Fury, who has to face it all alone without the Avengers and save humanity.

Secret Invasion will unfold a lot of mysteries that the previous movies built up. Since Captain Marvel, the Skrulls have been shown as innocent and have developed a good relationship with Nick Fury. It’s also shown in the Far From Home post-credit scenes that Fury has been working with the Skrulls, so why have they seemingly turned against him? Well, in the 2019 film, Carol Danvers and Nick Fury promised the Skrulls that they would find them a new home. But it looks like they didn’t keep their promise made years ago, which led to the Skrulls’ wrath on Earth in the form of an invasion. According to comics, the Skrulls replaced superheroes and influential figures by impersonating them for several years in order to conquer the earth, which they consider their “rightful” home.

For Fury’s allies, things are getting out of hand; thus, he returns to fight this battle alone. In the process, he also becomes the most wanted man on the planet after faking his death for years. From being sympathetically perceived to creating havoc on Earth, what are the Skrulls up to? Since when are they infiltrating? Where were they after Captain Marvel’s film? Which wars have taken place in the shadows? The series will finally answer all these cliffhanger questions, beginning June 21.

If Not The Avengers, Then Who Will Aid Fury?
Marvel studios

Well, fans shouldn’t be saddened by the fact that there won’t be any Avengers, as Don Cheadle, who played the War Machine for a decade, is going to reprise his role in the series. Secret Invasion events will lead to his solo series, Armor Wars. Apart from Rhodey, Everett Ross, Maria Hill, and Skrull leader Talos will also join Nick Fury in this invasion. But as the theme of the series goes: “Trust no one. Trust nothing” — which will make the viewers doubt the new faces as well as the old in the series.

Marvel has also introduced some new characters, which will add layers to this spy-thriller story. Emilia Clarke will make her debut as G’iah, who was last seen as a kid in Captain Marvel. According to Clarke, her character is filled with “resentment towards Fury” for not keeping his word about giving them a permanent home. Kingsley Ben Adir as Gravik and Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth will also appear in the series. Although The Great Nick Fury doesn’t have his superpower friends by his side, his powerful ability to play the cards right in any situation cannot be underestimated.
