Would Have Been Bridge Too Far

Dec 25, 2024

The following contains spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.Sonic the Hedgehog 3 originally had a darker fate for Sonic’s (Ben Schwartz) adopted dad, Tom (James Marsden). In the third installment, Sonic, Knuckles (Idris Elba), and Tails (Collen O’Shaughnessey) face their most dangerous enemies to date. After 50 years of imprisonment, Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) escapes and teams up with Doctor Eggman’s (Jim Carrey) grandfather on a mission to destroy the earth. While fighting for the key to launch a deadly weapon, Shadow puts Tom in a critical condition. His fate remains unknown until the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Talking to GamesRadar+, the writers behind the third installment, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, admitted that they wanted to kill off Tom at one point. Miller explains the idea behind it was to place Sonic “in a similar place of anger and wanting revenge as Shadow.” However, they eventually decided to move on from the idea because doing so would alienate the audience. Casey clarifies that “nobody really wants to see Tom die” and doing so would be “a bridge too far.” Check out what he said below:

Miller: There were definitely talks of how can we up the stakes. We knew that we wanted the end of the movie to be about Sonic kind of finding himself in a similar place of anger and wanting revenge as Shadow. So, it was kind of well like, what could push him to that point?

Casey: Ultimately we were like, nobody really wants to see Tom die. We want people to be happy at the end of this movie. I think doing that would have been maybe a bridge too far. I mean, even before we were movie writers, we were movie fans, and it’s often made me really mad when a character gets killed when they don’t have to, especially at the beginning of a sequel, when they take your favorite character from the previous one and kill them off in the first scene. They’re doing it to raise the stakes, but all they’re really accomplishing is pissing me off.

Sonic The Hedgehog Is About Happy Endings

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ends in all happiness. The Sonic family reunites after Tom’s hospital stay, and the post-credits scene hints about Shadow’s survival after sacrificing himself to save Earth. However, things are more complicated with Dr. Robotnik, who sacrifices himself as a hero for the sake of others after having been the main villain in previous movies. It’s also unclear whether Grandpa Robotnik survived. While speaking to Screen Rant, Miller and Casey tease that Robotnik is “definitely, definitely, definitely dead… unless he survives somehow.”

Sonic The Hedgehog 3’s Big Death Must Stick Now After Big Fakeout – But Will It?

Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s big character death was a surprisingly effective and emotional beat, but it could turn out to be another fake-out.

Their most recent comments offer some insights into where Sonic the Hedgehog stands when deciding the fates of well-loved characters. Even though the idea of killing off Tom was brought to the table at one point, it seems that the franchise wouldn’t go as far as using a well-loved character’s death to raise the stakes. The writers’ sentiment about making fans feel happy seems to offer an optimistic update on Dr. Robotnik’s fate, who might very well be alive in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
Our Take On Sonic The Hedgehog 3

Tom Gives Sonic A Scare

Paramount Pictures

Tom’s potential death was enough to push Sonic over the edge. Even though Tom wasn’t dead at the end, it’s clear that the film really played around the idea. After receiving a blow from Shadow, Tom loses consciousness, and it seems that he almost meets his demise at that moment. The same happened to Maria, only that she really died in the explosion. Sonic goes through the same emotional journey as Shadow, and they both realize that revenge isn’t the way to honor their loved ones.

Sonic and Shadow are like two sides of the same coin in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which plays around the idea while creating the narrative.

Sonic’s journey makes Shadow a more relatable character because he’d end up doing the same if such a tragedy happened to him. At the same time, the good in Sonic also exists in Shadow, even though his chaotic power makes him stronger and more dangerous. Sonic and Shadow are like two sides of the same coin in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which plays around the idea while creating the narrative. Sonic goes against his own team to retract the Emeralds to defeat Shadow, but Sonic is also the one hedgehog who pulls Shadow back.
