‘X-Men ’97’ Producers Says X-Force & X-Factor Will Turn Up

Mar 18, 2024

’90s kids and longtime “X-Men” fans will get a chance to revisit their childhood as Marvel Animation and Disney+ are releasing a continuation of the Fox Kids series with “X-Men ’97” this week. And studio brass is already teasing more mutant teams are coming. Brad Winderbaum, who is overseeing both animation and television divisions at Marvel, has revealed to Black Girl Nerds during an interview that X-Factor, X-Force, and other mutant groups (possibly Excalibur too) should be expected in the streaming series.

“I’m just going to tell you the truth, and that is yes,” Winderbaum said about including more mutant teams for the streaming series when asked about expanding the X-Universe. “When you go into the ’90s comics, so much of it is about not just X-Men. Not just Uncanny, but like X-Factor, [and] X-Force, they’ll all sort of orbiting the same stories. It is challenging to separate one from the other, and certainly, the show is leaning in.”
Winderbaum also confirmed that season three of “X-Men ’97” is in early development while speaking with the Phase Zero podcast by simply stating, “We’re developing season three.”
X-Factor, a mutant team backed by the U.S. government, had a brief appearance in the original series with a lineup that consisted of Havock (Cyclops’ brother who appeared in the “First Class” era films), Polaris (Magneto’s daughter who was in the short-lived live-action Fox series “The Gifted”), Quicksilver (Magneto’s son played by both Evan Peters and Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Strong Guy, Multiple Man (nearly a solo feature film during the Fox/Singerverse era starring James Franco), Forge, and Wolfsbane (once played by Maisie Williams in the “New Mutants” movie).
It wouldn’t be all that shocking to see X-Force show up, given that Nathan Summers, aka Cable (Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor’s son from the future), featured in episodes in the original show with some minor cameos from Domino and Deadpool. The team roster has fluctuated over the years in Marvel Comics. Still, it will be interesting to see what version Marvel Animation decides to go with, although the ’90s incarnations naturally feel the most appropriate.
“X-Men ’97” makes its debut on March 20 exclusively on Disney+, and you can watch that full interview with Black Girl Nerds below.
